Nobody needs to tell the citizens of Alaska how much fun off-roading on an all-terrain vehicle can be. Whether you prefer taking your side-by-side out for a spin on the Bald Mountain Trail in Wasilla, using your four-wheeler to tackle the gravel pits of the Eureka Trails in Glenallen, or simply riding around your property on a UTV, having an ATV insurance policy may be necessary to prevent you from incurring undue financial losses. There is no reason to pay more than you need to for this coverage, so be sure to request and compare a number of ATV insurance quotes in Alaska before making a purchase.

Use our independent agent matching system to find the best insurance plan in your area. You tell us what you’re looking for, and our technology will recommend the best agents for you. Any information you provide will be sent to only the agents you pick. We do not sell to third parties.

ATV Use Does Come with Risks

  • In 2010, ATV accidents resulted in approximately 115,000 serious injuries and 590 fatalities in America
  • Of those injured in these accidents, about 28,000 were children
  • Between 2008 and 2011, 19 residents of Alaska lost their lives in ATV accidents

Tearing up the trails on a quad or a 3-wheeler can be fun, but it is important to remember that these are powerful machines and that accidents sometimes happen. Having sufficient coverage in place can help to prevent large financial losses in the wake of an accident.

AK State Laws Regarding All-terrain Vehicle Use

  • No one under the age of 14 may operate an ATV in a state park unless under the direct supervision of an adult age 21 or older
  • ATVs are deemed unsafe for road use and cannot be registered as motor vehicles and therefore are not permitted on roadways, except to cross to the other side or if the road has been closed to traffic

Unlike many states, the laws pertaining to ATV ownership and use are very lax in the state of Alaska. Additionally, ATV insurance coverage is not mandatory in this state.

Why Should Alaska Residents Purchase ATV Insurance?

Since ATV insurance is not required in Alaska, you may be wondering why you should even consider purchasing such a policy. The fact is, this relatively inexpensive coverage can be used to shield you from overwhelming debts in the event that you cause injuries or property damage to another while operating your ATV. This coverage can also protect the investment you have made in the purchase of your vehicle.

Homeowners may be able to count on their home insurance policies to cover some damages and expenses that an ATV accident may bring about, but this coverage is typically quite limited. Whether you use your all-terrain vehicle for hunting, recreation or even agricultural purposes, having an ATV insurance policy is the best way to protect your finances and your investment.

What Do ATV Insurance Policies Cover?

ATV policies do not differ much from one company to the next, but the coverage that is included with a basic policy might be different. Some coverage offerings that may be included with a standard policy by some insurance companies may be optional in the policies offered by others. This means that they will need to be purchased in addition to the basic policy if you want that sort of coverage. This is something you will need to keep in mind when you are comparing quotes.

You can expect your policy to offer the following coverage types:

  • Liability coverage: This is designed to protect you from liability charges stemming from property damage or bodily injury charges to a third-party that are caused by an ATV accident for which you are at fault.
  • Collision damage coverage: This is designed to cover the cost of repairs to your ATV if it is damaged in a collision, regardless of fault.
  • Medical payments coverage: This is intended to cover medical costs for you and your passengers if you are injured in an ATV accident, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive damages coverage: This may cover the costs associated with repairs to or replacement of your ATV if it is lost or damaged while not in use. Examples of covered events include fires, floods, fires, falling objects, severe weather, vandalism and theft.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage: If the operator of another ATV is at fault for a collision in which you sustain injuries or property damage, but lacks the necessary insurance or funds to cover your losses, this coverage may be able to make up the difference. This is particularly important in Alaska, where insurance is not required.
  • Trailer damages coverage: This is designed to cover damages to the trailer you use to transport your ATV to and from the trails in the event that it is damaged while in use.

Are Quotes for ATV Insurance High in Alaska?

On average, ATV insurance costs less than one dollar a day for full coverage. In Alaska, where weather conditions limit the use of these vehicles to only a few months out of the year, you may be better off purchasing partial-year policies, which can make this coverage even less expensive.

When you call different providers to request ATV insurance quotes, your costs will be calculated based on several factors. These may include:

  • The type of ATV you own: A 3-wheeler will cost more to insure than a UTV, for example, because these vehicles tend to be less stable and can reach greater speeds.
  • The value of your ATV: If your coverage includes comprehensive, collision or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, the value of your vehicle will affect your policy rates.
  • How you use your ATV: If you own your ATV for agricultural purposes or to do yard work on a large piece of land, your risks are very different than they are for someone who uses their vehicle for recreational purposes only. Your insurance company may take this into consideration when calculating your rate.
  • The amount of coverage you purchase: As with any type of insurance, the more coverage you purchase, the higher the rate.
  • Your driving record: Your driving history can reflect the ways in which you are likely to operate your ATV, so having a clean driving record can keep your costs low.
  • Your deductible: The higher your deductible, the lower your premiums will be. Choose the highest deductible that you feel comfortable paying.

When you are requesting ATV insurance quotes, be sure to ask whether the insurance company you are contacting offers any types of policy discounts. You may qualify to save money if you have multiple policies with the same insurer, opt for electronic billing and payment methods, or having a claims-free renewal.
