How Idaho Does Snowmobiling

  • There are nearly 40,000 snowmobiles registered in the state of ID, ranking it fourth in the nation in terms of the number of sleds.
  • Sledders in Idaho are at high risk of being lost, injured or killed in avalanches.
  • During a recent winter, one snowmobile rider was killed and another buried and injured due to avalanches.
  • Each year snowmobile accidents lead to approximately 200 deaths and 14,000 injuries nationwide.

Am I Required to Carry Snowmobile Insurance in Idaho?

Although not required by ID law, snowmobile insurance is important to protect yourself from damage to your sled and from paying for costly injuries to yourself or other riders. Idaho does require all snowmobiles to be registered with the state on or before November 1 of each year. The registration fees of $32.50 for personal machines and $62.50 for rental machines go right back into the sport. These fees help the Idaho Parks and Recreation Department keep those trails groomed and sledding programs humming along.

Why Is Snowmobile Insurance Important?

Snowmobiles range in price from as little as $2,600 to as much as $26,000 for a brand new, high-powered sled. That's a lot of cash to invest in the hobby of sledding. The wind in your face and the snow spray on your heavy winter jacket as you zip by the unfolding, majestic Idaho countryside is worth every penny. However, you will want to protect your investment should your sled be involved in an accident.

Swift repairs paid for by a comprehensive snowmobile insurance policy will enable you to hit the trails again in no time. Additionally, should you cause injury or damage to another snowmobile or its rider, you could be held liable for any repairs or any medical treatment the rider requires. A snowmobile insurance policy can protect you from paying those costly expenses.

What Does Snowmobile Insurance Cover?

Most Idaho insurance providers will offer you several options to choose from when you build your snowmobile insurance policy. You can buy specific coverage for your sled, such as liability only coverage, or you may be able to buy a package of coverages. A basic snowmobile insurance package may include the following:

  • Collision coverage pays for damages resulting in a crash with another sled or vehicle.
  • Comprehensive coverage helps pay for other damages to your sled, such as severe weather events, theft, and vandalism.
  • Bodily injury liability coverage protects you from paying for the medical treatment of others if your sled injures them.
  • Property damage liability coverage protects you in the event you crash into another person's property, such as a fence, barn, or other structure.

Depending on the Idaho insurance company, other insurance options you may be able to purchase for your snowmobile could include:

  • Uninsured and underinsured driver coverage for bodily injury and property damage, in the event that another person causes harm to you or your snowmobile and does not have insurance to pay for damages.
  • Accessory coverage for such things as helmets, windshields, custom seats, riding gear, and eyewear.
  • Year-round coverage, in the event that your snowmobile is damaged or stolen in the off-season. Some people choose to ensure their sleds only during the winter months when they are in use, but that does not protect them in the event their snowmobile is damaged or stolen during the summer.

What Will My Snowmobile Insurance Quote Look Like?

For the protection it offers and the peace of mind it provides, snowmobile coverage is often very affordable. The quotes you will see for insurance on your sled vary depending on the coverage you buy and the type of machine you drive. The majority of Idaho insurance companies will take the following into account when they calculate your quote:

  • The make and model of the snowmobile
  • The Idaho county in which you live
  • Where you will ride
  • Your age
  • How you intend to use your sled
  • The deductible you set
  • Type of coverage you buy and/or optional coverage

Your quote can be as low as around $80 to $100 per year if you buy liability coverage only. More comprehensive package quotes average between $300 to $400 dollars annually.
