If you enjoy the water, New Hampshire is the place for you. With 13 miles of coastline, it’s the shortest coast in the U.S., but that doesn’t stop beachgoers from flocking to the sand and surf each summer. Of course, if the beach is just too crowded for you, there are plenty of freshwater lakes. The state boasts 944 lakes with the largest being Winnipesaukee Lake, coming in at over 44,000 acres. That’s plenty of room to operate a boat, but many residents enjoy a PWC for its size and mobility. While they’re very fun, they also pose individual risks. Although New Hampshire PWC insurance isn’t required by law, it can aid you in various situations.

Use our independent agent matching system to find the best insurance plan in your area. You tell us what you’re looking for, and our technology will recommend the best agents for you. Any information you provide will be sent to only the agents you pick. We do not sell to third parties.

New Hampshire PWC Rules

  • “Ski craft” are less than 13 feet long and can exceed 20 mph.
  • If you’re under age 16, you’re not allowed to operate a PWC.
  • If you’re riding a PWC, you must wear an approved life vest.
  • You can only operate a PWC from sunrise to sunset.
  • You cannot operate a PWC within 150 feet of another vessel or person.

Types of PWCs and Risks

  • Sit down model: This PWC is generally made for one to two people and is known for its speed. Some can reach speeds nearing 100 mph, putting the driver, passenger, and others on the lake at grave risk if an accident occurs.
  • Multi-person model: This PWC can accommodate up to four people and is popular with families. While they don’t reach high speeds, a multi-person model can become unstable without the right amount of weight.
  • Stand up model: This PWC is one of the original forms and is meant only for one person. Standing up presents a risk because you have farther to fall and losing your balance at high speeds can be dangerous.

Do I Need New Hampshire PWC Insurance?

Although you may not feel like paying an extra insurance premium, the risk of riding a PWC is too great to ignore. Each year, reports of PWC accidents increase as the weather gets warmer. If you cause an accident, you’re held responsible for the injuries and property damage regardless of whether you have New Hampshire PWC insurance. One of the most important aspects of insurance coverage is extra liability protection. Don’t assume your homeowner policy will cover PWC accidents.

Due to the high level of risk these machines present, many homeowner policies exclude claims for a PWC accident. New Hampshire PWC insurance is specifically made to deal with a PWC accident. These “ski crafts” are expensive and even a one-person accident can be expensive to fix. Comprehensive PWC insurance can help repair your watercraft. But, if you collide with a boat or another PWC and injure someone, the consequences can be devastating. The injured party can make a liability claim with your insurance coverage, but make sure the limit matches your other insurance policies. You can just as easily lose your financial assets to a PWC accident as easily as you can to a dog attack or car accident.
