Q: How can I protect doors from flooding?

A: The first step in protecting your home from flooding is checking to make sure the seals of the doors are tight. The seal lines the entire door, and over time it can loosen or get damaged. If the seal is loose or damaged, it can allow water in. If you've checked the seal and it's in good shape, you can take additional steps to keep your home protected. Typically, this is just by adding another layer of protection.

For example, you can line the base of the door with duct tape and a tarp. Some people choose one door they'll use for access into and out of the home and seal all other doors with a tarp and duct tape from the outside, too. This will only add more protection and reduce the likelihood that water may get in your home.

If you live in an area where there's a high risk of flooding, flood insurance may be federally required. If it isn't required, it may still be worth your while. In either scenario, it's best to discuss your options with your independent insurance agent.
