Q: Is It Safe to Swim in Flood Water?

A: No, it's never safe to swim in floodwater. It can contain any number of harmful substances, including:

  • Human and animal waste
  • Industrial hazardous waste
  • Physical objects, including anything from wood to debris or even car parts
  • Wild or stray animals, including dangerous ones like snakes

Additionally, floodwater could run over downed power lines. This puts you at risk for potential electric shock. If you have to wade through or swim in floodwater to get to your destination, find an alternate route.
