As the largest metropolitan area in the Midwest, the city of Chicago is perhaps not a prime location for all-terrain vehicle riding. However, if you have an ATV, you may be like many other riders who head to state parks for some off-road fun on weekends and vacations. Or, if you live in the suburbs, you may use an ATV for light duty farm work, trail riding or snow removal.

Whether you own a UTV, 3-wheeler, four-wheeler or other ATV, insurance will help you protect your investment. Contact a local independent agent in the Trusted Choice® network today for more information about Chicago, IL ATV insurance. One of these agents can answer your specific questions about insuring your ATV. Your agent can also help you compare Chicago ATV insurance quotes from several different companies and find the right fit for your needs and budget.

Is ATV Insurance Required in Chicago?

Because ATVs are generally not used on a roadway, the city of Chicago does not require insurance on all-terrain vehicles. However, state law requires that if you use your ATV on any highway, roadway or traffic right-of-way, you are required to have proof of the state minimum insurance coverage on your ATV. Failure to prove insurance subjects you to three months of a suspended license, a $500 fine and a $100 fee to reinstate your license. While rates on Chicago ATV insurance vary, it does cost less per year to carry insurance than to pay fees and fines for not having it.

How Much Does Chicago ATV Insurance Cost?

There are many factors that go into an ATV insurance rate. ATV riders use their vehicles for many different purposes and in many different ways. You can get specific information about your situation from a member agent in the Trusted Choice network.

Some factors that are included in an ATV insurance rate are the following:

  • Age and gender of the primary operator
  • ZIP code where the ATV is stored• Age, size and engine power of the ATV
  • Ages and genders of all operators
  • Driving record• Insurance record

In addition to these factors, how you use your four-wheeler or other all-terrain vehicle also has an impact on your rates. Some riders use ATVs as business vehicles to haul cargo or work on farms and ranches, while many others use their ATVs simply for recreation. Where you live makes a difference too. Insurers sometimes offer rates tied to a specific ZIP code or even a specific neighborhood.

What Does ATV Insurance Cover?

While ATVs are different from cars and trucks, the coverage on an ATV policy looks very similar to what is on a standard auto policy. The basic coverage includes the following:

  • Bodily injury liability: This pays for any injuries and medical bills of those hurt in an accident that was your fault. Coverage limits are per individual per occurrence and total per occurrence, regardless of the number of individuals involved.
  • Property damage liability: This pays for any damage to a vehicle or property caused by you in an accident. The amount is the coverage limit per occurrence, regardless of how many objects or vehicles are damaged.
  • Comprehensive: This pays for any damage to your ATV caused by falling objects or weather events, or if you hit an animal while you are riding. This coverage may also cover theft or vandalism to your ATV.
  • Collision: This coverage pays for damages to your ATV in an accident involving one or more other vehicles. This pays to repair your vehicle or gives you replacement cost for the value of the ATV if you suffer a total loss.
  • Uninsured motorist: This compensates you in case of a loss due to an accident caused by an ATV operator who is not insured. As ATV insurance is not required off-road, this might be the most important coverage to have.
