All-terrain vehicles are quite popular throughout the state of New York. Anyone who has ever hit the trails in the Finger Lakes region or the recreation areas of the Adirondacks knows the joy ATVs can provide. If you are living in Plattsburgh, Jamestown, or anywhere in between, you have probably seen ATVs cruising the hills and trails. You have probably also noticed workers using UTVs (utility terrain vehicles) or side-by-sides for roadwork, golf course maintenance and other commercial purposes.

Just like home or car insurance, a solid New York ATV insurance policy is one way to protect your health, your vehicle, and your financial future. You can begin that process when you visit with an independent agent in the Trusted Choice® network to get multiple New York ATV insurance quotes. Contact a member agent today so you can relax knowing you have quality coverage and someone who can answer your questions.

New York ATV Insurance Requirements

  • $50,000/$100,000 per person/occurrence for death
  • $25,000/$50,000 per person/occurrence for bodily injury
  • $10,000 property damage per accident

If your quad (4-wheel ATV), side-by-side, or 3-wheeler ever leaves your property, state law requires that you carry a minimum level of liability coverage on each ATV you own. You can increase those levels depending upon your potential for loss. That is an area your local Trusted Choice member agent can help you assess.

Special Circumstances for Children on ATVs

Many people with ATVs wrongly assume that those under legal driving age have the same restrictions and must abide by the same laws as adults. In fact, there is no law that requires a driver’s license to operate an ATV. In addition, there is no minimum age limit for ATV operation, as long as there is “adult supervision.”

Even that is not mandatory for operation on private property when the parent or guardian is the owner or tenant. Children between 10 and 15 years of age do not need adult supervision if they have completed an ATV safety-training course sponsored by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

New York ATV Casualties

Since people ride ATVs off-road where conditions are more hazardous, the rates of ATV injury and death are higher than for automobiles. The most common ATV and UTV uses are for hunting, farming, ranching, and recreational trail riding.

  • There were 399 reported ATV deaths in New York between 1982 and 2011
  • There were 61 reported N.Y. ATV deaths between 2008 and 2011
  • There were 64 children who died from ATV accidents in N.Y. between 1982 and 2007

This data indicates that the number of ATV deaths is accelerating and that a large number of these fatalities are children under 16.

New York ATV insurance cannot prevent accidents or deaths. However, it can be extremely valuable in the event that someone is injured and you are responsible. Beyond liability coverage, collision and comprehensive coverage is also available in case your ATV is damaged in an accident, is stolen, vandalized, or there is loss from fire. Your local Trusted Choice member agent will help analyze your needs and provide competing New York ATV insurance quotes that will help you determine appropriate levels of coverage.

How Much Does New York ATV Insurance Cost?

The rates for ATV insurance coverage can vary according to what part of the state you live in, where the ATV will be used and how much coverage you need. New York ATV insurance in an urban area like Manhattan could be relatively high because there might be a higher risk of theft or vandalism while it is stored or parked. Rates in a rural area like Saratoga Springs might be lower because there are fewer risks when the vehicle is not in use. The amount of use also affects rates; someone who rides trails occasionally on weekends may likely pay a different rate than someone who uses it every day on a farm for work purposes.
