Virginia ATV Statistics
Here are some facts according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission:
- Since ATVs became available on the market in 1982, 226 Virginians have died from injuries they sustained while riding ATVs.
- Of those, nearly 40 deaths were of youths aged 16 and younger.
- Insurers pay millions of dollars each year to repair damage to property caused by ATVs in Virginia.
Why Is ATV Insurance Important?
Chances are you have invested a lot of money in your ATV. One accident can cause costly damage that leaves your ATV parked indefinitely while you wait to afford repairs. One accident that leaves another person injured could leave you facing huge medical bills and even a lawsuit. Just as auto insurance protects drivers from severe financial liability, so too does ATV insurance protect riders against these possibilities.
Finding Insurance for Your ATV
Most insurance providers in VA offer policies for all ATV models, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Three-wheelers
- Four-wheelers
- Battery-operated ATVs
- UTVs
- Sport ATVs
- Side-by-sides
- Six- and even eight-wheel varieties
ATV Insurance Requirements
Although Virginia does not require all riders to carry insurance on their ATVs, ATV owners and riders must abide by the following:
- Virginia requires titling for ATVs of more than 50 cc's purchased as new on or after July 1, 2006.
- All ATV riders must wear helmets.
- No one under 16 may operate an ATV, except that children between the ages of 12 and 16 may operate ATVs of no more than 90 cc's and children less than age 12 may operate ATVs of no more than 70 cc's.
- The state prohibits passengers on ATVs not designed for passengers.
- The state prohibits ATV use on public highways, except to cross those roads for agricultural purposes or while in Buchanan County.
Additionally, some ATV trail organizations require you to carry your own insurance before hitting their trails. Other organizations, like the Charles City Dirt Riders, require you to pay membership dues, some of which go toward paying for the organization's own insurance policy.
What Does ATV Insurance Cover?
Most Virginia insurance providers offer the following options for ATV coverage:
- Liability coverage: Covers the costs of bodily injury and property damage up to a determined amount if you cause an accident and covers the cost of your legal fees should you face a lawsuit
- Collision coverage: Pays for repairs to your damaged ATV after an accident
- Comprehensive coverage: Provides protection if your ATV is vandalized, damaged by severe weather or stolen
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: Helps cover your costs if an uninsured/underinsured rider causes and accident
What Will Your ATV Insurance Quotes Look Like?
Because ATVs and their riders have so many differences, it is difficult to estimate average insurance quotes.
Virginia insurance providers will take some or all of the following into account when calculating your ATV insurance quotes:
- Your driving record
- The top speed of the ATV
- How often it is used
- Your credit history
- The ages of the allowed drivers
- Your age
- Your gender
Quotes for a 45-year-old woman who uses her ATV around her own property occasionally will be far less than quotes for a 22-year-old man who goes off-roading on a number of Virginia's ATV trails every weekend.
