GMC Insurance

GMC is General Motors' second-largest North American vehicle division after Chevrolet and is a well-known maker of trucks, vans, SUVs, and crossovers. If you own a GMC vehicle and are looking for affordable, quality car insurance, you can contact an independent agent for assistance.

Provide a few details about what you're looking for and get recommendations about the best agents for you. To start, lets talk more about the best type of insurance for your GMC.

What Type of Insurance Is Best for Your GMC?

Bodily injury liability: Most states require all drivers to have bodily injury liability coverage. It covers the costs associated with things like medical bills or lost wages for third-party drivers, passengers, and pedestrians if you're in an at-fault accident.

Property damage liability: Most states also require property damage liability which covers the costs associated with any third-party property damage as a result of an at-fault accident.

While liability insurance is required in most states, the minimum amount may not be sufficient coverage if you're in a serious accident. You'll want to work with an independent insurance agent to make sure your coverage is adequate for your needs.

Medical payments/Personal injury protection: In some states, medical payments or personal injury protection (PIP) coverage is required. No-fault laws require that drivers submit a claim to their personal insurance whether they're at fault in an accident or not. Whether you were at fault or not, PIP insurance assists in paying for medical bills that are associated with the accident. In states that it's not required, it can still be voluntarily purchased. In those states, it's listed as medical payments coverage.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage:  Uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance pays for damage to your vehicle if you're in an accident with another party, you're not at fault, but the other party doesn't have enough insurance coverage to pay for the damage done to your vehicle or property.

Optional coverage:

Collision: Collision coverage helps you pay for any damage that results from an accident with another vehicle, structure, or object. It will not cover a collision with an animal.

Comprehensive: For things like hailstorms, freak encounters with wild animals, and the random rock falling from the sky, comprehensive coverage is there to help pay for the damage.

Glass coverage: With glass coverage, you can repair chips and cracks, and fully replace your windshield for zero deductible. This policy endorsement may only cost you a few extra dollars per year.

Gap insurance: When you purchase a brand new vehicle or lease a vehicle from a dealer they'll offer you gap coverage. This policy helps you pay the difference between what you owe on your vehicle and the value of your vehicle if you're in an accident and your GMC is considered a total loss. Even if you don't accept gap coverage at the dealer, you can add it to your coverage at any time.

What Factors Affect the Cost of Insurance for Your GMC?

Annual mileage: Insurance companies see more time on the road as a greater risk of getting in an accident. If you drive more than the average person, which is around 10,000-15,000 miles a year, you may see a slight increase in your car insurance premiums.

Driving record: Having just one violation on your record can greatly increase your insurance premium. Most violations fall off your record after a certain amount of time, and your independent insurance agent can help you understand when that might be.

The value of your car: The price of your vehicle is a major contributing factor to the cost of your insurance premium. Depending on the GMC model you could be paying more than $70,000 for your vehicle. This means that your insurance company will be responsible for that much money if they have to replace your vehicle. If you're hoping to lower your insurance premium you can look into buying an older model versus brand new. As the value of a vehicle depreciates, your premium price will follow.

Average GMC prices and insurance premiums:

GMC model Vehicle price Annual insurance premium
GMC Arcadia $29,800 - $48,300 $1,294
GMC Canyon $26,400 - $44,700 $1,324
GMC Sierra $29,700 - $59,000 $1,460
GMC Terrain $25,000 - $34,100 $1,336
GMC Yukon $50,700 - $71,400 $1,500
GMC Yukon XL $53,400 - $74,100 $1,454

The safety of your GMC

Typically, the safer the vehicle, the better the auto insurance rates. This is because insurance companies have lower risks of bodily injury payments when accidents occur in vehicles with high safety ratings.

GMC takes pride in its vehicles and works hard to ensure that they meet or exceed safety requirements and guidelines.

When the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reviewed the three most popular 2021 GMC models, the results were as follows:

Acadia

  • "Good" rating in all crash tests including overall crash by IIHS
  • Five-out-of-five stars in NHTSA overall crash tests: frontal-crash, frontal-crash driver, overall side-crash, side-crash rear passenger, and side pole-crash

Sierra

  • "Good" rating in front moderate overlap, front small overlap, side crash, rear crash, and roof crash tests by IIHS
  • Five-out-of-five stars in NHTSA overall side-crash, side-crash driver, side-crash rear passenger, and side pole-crash

Terrain

  • "Good" rating in all crash tests including overall crash by IIHS
  • Five-out-of-five stars in NHTSA crash tests including overall crash

Where you live with your GMC

Some states are naturally more expensive for insurance than others, but whether you live in a big city or a small town can also affect your rates. Driving busier roads and being more susceptible to traffic, theft, and vandalism can all impact the cost of your insurance premiums.

Average cost to insure a GMC

The average annual cost to insure a GMC is $1,460, which is an impressive price considering most GMC models are trucks or sports vehicles. Those costs could go up or down depending on if you're a high-risk driver or are willing to take a higher deductible. High-risk drivers will pay an average of $3,150 annually, and high-deductible drivers will pay closer to $1,248.

Average annual premium for GMC
Teen drivers $5,338
