Hummer Insurance

Hummers are ideal for those who want a solid and reliable vehicle. Hummer stopped making vehicles in 2010, but recently announced the return of the popular Hummer as an Electric Pickup Truck and SUV sold under the GMC brand. If you want to navigate the roadways in your very own Hummer, you will want to be certain that you are insuring it with a suitable car insurance policy.

Independent agents can help you find competitively priced Hummer car insurance policies so that you can be sure you are not overpaying for your coverage.

These agents can answer your insurance-related questions and can advise you about your various coverage options. Find a member agent near you today to learn more about Hummer insurance.

What Kind of Insurance Do You Need for Your Hummer?

Your ideal insurance coverage protects you financially from any incidents that may occur in your Hummer. Whether it's an accident, vandalism, or if your vehicle is stolen, a good insurance package keeps money in your pocket.

Some insurance types are required by state law. Your insurance agent can talk with you about required and optional coverage.

Most states require this coverage

  •  Bodily injury liability: If an accident you cause results in injuries to your passengers, other drivers, or pedestrians, bodily injury liability will cover medical expenses and lost wages for covered incidents. New Hampshire and Florida are the only states where this coverage is optional.
  •  Property damage liability:  While property damage liability won't pay for repairs to your Hummer, it will cover the cost of replacing or repairing a vehicle, structure, or building that is damaged in an accident.

Many states also require this coverage

Medical payments/Personal injury protection: If you live in a "no-fault" state, you have the option to purchase a personal injury protection (PIP) policy to cover accident-related medical expenses incurred by you or your passengers. In some states PIP coverage is not offered under this name, instead, you can choose medical payments coverage to provide a similar amount of coverage.

Uninsured motorist coverage: Many drivers are on the road without proper coverage. If your Hummer is in an incident with an uninsured motorist, you'll be paying out of pocket for any damage to your vehicle and yourself. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage handles those costs for you. While it's optional in many states, this is an important type of insurance that offers an inexpensive way to add value to your auto insurance policy.

Optional coverage

Collision insurance: This coverage might be optional but it's worth considering if the value of your Hummer is more than you'd want to pay yourself to replace it. If you have a loan or lease, collision insurance is required, otherwise, it's up to you whether you want to purchase it. With collision insurance, your insurance company will pay to replace or repair your Hummer if there's an accident. This type of policy doesn't cover theft, hail damage, damage to someone else's property, or medical costs.

Comprehensive insurance: Also called "other than collision" insurance, this handles costs related to non-collision events that damage your vehicle, like a power line falling on your car during a fire. This coverage is optional, and it pays for damage minus your deductible. It also covers accidents that occur because you hit an animal on the road or damage to your Hummer due to a weather event.

Glass coverage: Windshield replacements are never cheap, neither are rock chips and cracks. This zero-deductible glass coverage policy pays to repair rock chips or replace broken glass and only costs just a few dollars each month.

Gap insurance: If you have an outstanding lease or loan on your Hummer and you are in an accident, the insurance company will only pay for damage or replacement costs up to the vehicle's value. If your car is a total loss and you owe more than it's worth, you may end up with outstanding debt. Gap insurance pays off your lease or loan so you don't have to pay that cost out of pocket.

What Affects the Cost of Insurance for Your Hummer?

Numerous factors go into determining your Hummer car insurance rates. Companies look at anything that can affect your experience and likelihood of a being in an accident and factor that into your premium cost.

Annual mileage

The typical driver averages 10,000-15,000 miles per year. If you drive a lot more or a lot less, then this amount can change the cost of your insurance premium. Insurance companies see more time on the road as a greater risk of getting in an accident.

Driving record

Having just one violation on your record can greatly increase your insurance premium. A clean driving record means lower premium rates. Most violations fall off your record after a certain amount of time, and your independent insurance agent can help you understand when that might be.

The value of your car

As to be expected, the more valuable your Hummer is, the more it will cost to insure. If you're opting for the brand new Hummer EV, you're looking at paying around $112,000. Even the retired 2010 models will still run you anywhere from $17,000 to $35,000. If you're hoping to lower your insurance premium, you can look into buying an older model as Hummers date back to 2002. As the value of a vehicle depreciates, your premium price will follow.

Average cost of a Hummer insurance policy

In the United States, a Hummer driver who is a 40-year-old male with a clean driving record pays an average of $1,472 per year for a full-coverage insurance policy with a $500 deductible. Those rates may be higher or lower for a teen driver, high-risk driver, or someone who chooses a high deductible.

Hummer vehicle annual insurance rate averages
Teen driver $5,358
High-risk driver $3,172
Policy with low deductibles $1,888
Average rate $1472
Policy with high deductibles $1,260

The safety of your Hummer

The 2022 Hummer EV has yet to be tested for safety, but since previous Hummer's are Class 3 trucks, they're exempt from many DOT safety standards including passive restraints and third brake-lights. These vehicles do, however, have padded dashboards and collapsible steering columns.

They also have steel roofs and doors that add to their safety in crashes. All Hummers come standard with anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, hill-start assist, full-length side curtain airbags and an OnStar security and navigation system.

The Hummer H3 has performed well in crash testing.

  • From government crash testing in 2010
    • In front-impact tests, this vehicle rated a perfect five out of five stars for driver protection and four out of five stars for passenger protection.
    • In side impact tests, it rated five out of five stars for both front and rear seat passengers.
  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Tests rates Hummer “acceptable” in both front and side-impact crash testing.

Because of the way they are built, when Hummers are involved in motor vehicle collisions, drivers in other cars are very likely to suffer severe property damage and injuries. If you own one of these large, heavy trucks, it may be a wise choice to purchase additional liability insurance coverage.

How location affects your Hummer insurance

Depending on where you live, you may pay higher insurance rates. Residents of these states have the highest average auto insurance rates in the country.

Yearly average insurance rates for residents
Delaware $1,668
California $1,680
Mississippi $1,766
Nevada $1,766
Texas $1,776
Florida $1,844
Rhode Island $1,966
Kentucky $2,010
Louisiana $2,182
Michigan $2,560

Location isn't the only factor that affects your auto insurance rates, of course. Your rates may be much lower or much higher than these, depending on your age, driving record, and the type of vehicle you drive.

Average Cost to Insure a Hummer

Your annual insurance premium also depends on your deductible. A Hummer has an average annual premium of $1,472, but changing your deductible impacts that number.

Deductible Average Premium
$100 $1,888
$250 $1,696
$500 $1,472
$1,000 $1,260

Your agent can help you decide how to balance your deductible and your insurance premium so it fits into your budget and aligns with your financial goals.
