Most Jeep owners love their vehicles and continue to buy from the Jeep brand time and time again. These high-performance vehicles can tear through just about any road conditions you throw their way.

If you are considering the purchase of a Jeep, you may have a lot of questions about these cars, ranging from safety and performance to car insurance considerations. If you already own one, you may wonder if you are overpaying for your Jeep insurance.

Local independent insurance agents are familiar with the Jeep brand, and can take your individual needs into account to find an insurance policy that works for you. An independent agent can compare multiple policies and quotes to make sure that you don’t overpay for insurance.

What Kind of Insurance Do You Need for Your Jeep?

A new Jeep is not a cheap investment. You will want to be sure that you have sufficient insurance coverage to cover the losses that may result from a break-in to your Jeep, or worse, if your Jeep is stolen.

The following coverages are typical offerings for Jeep owners

Bodily injury liability: This coverage pays for medical expenses and lost wages for other drivers or passengers involved in an accident where you're the driver.

Property damage liability: Property damage liability pays to repair or replace a third party's structure, vehicle, or other personal property if you're driving your car and cause damage to their property.

Liability insurance is required in most states with a minimum coverage amount. It's likely that the minimum coverage will not be enough to cover you in the event of an accident, so it's important to work with your independent agent to make sure you have adequate coverage.

Many states also require this coverage

Medical payments/Personal injury protection: If you or your passengers are injured in an at-fault accident, then medical payments (med pay) or personal injury protection (PIP) coverage pays for smaller necessary medical treatment. PIP insurance is available in "no-fault" states and a requirement in most. Other states that do not participate in PIP will have med pay insurance.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage: Uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage pays for damage to your vehicle when the other party is at fault and does not have enough or any insurance. UM/UIM insurance is not always a required coverage, but it is essential to be adequately covered.

Optional coverage

Collision: This coverage pays for damage to your vehicle that results from an accident where you are the driver. It will also pay for collisions with other objects like a fence or a tree.

Comprehensive: Damage to your vehicle due to natural disasters, storms, and other incidents out of your control is covered with comprehensive insurance

Glass coverage: Depending on the type of Jeep you drive, a windshield replacement could cost you near $1,000. Glass coverage is an endorsement typically costing only a few extra dollars per year that will repair or replace glass for no deductible.

Gap insurance: If you're financing or leasing your Jeep, then you might want to consider purchasing gap insurance. This insurance will pay the difference between your car's value and the outstanding amount owed on a loan or lease if you're in an accident where insurance deems your Jeep a total loss.

What Affects the Cost of Insurance for Your Jeep?

While multiple factors go into calculating insurance premiums, some of the most impactful are the age of the driver and the value of the vehicle. Young drivers usually pay higher premiums than experienced drivers. In fact, teen Jeep drivers spend an average of $5,398 per year for insurance. The lowest average premium is $850 annually, including discounts. Those with multiple driving violations or accidents will pay higher premiums. A high-risk driver pays an average of $3,122 per year for Jeep insurance.

The model of the vehicle you drive also affects your insurance rates. The rates below assume that the driver is a 40-year-old male with a clean driving record. The policies also represent a $500 comprehensive and collision deductible, UM/UIM coverage, and minimum liability limits. Rates are averaged across all 50 states.

Annual average insurance premium for a Jeep by model Annual Premium
Jeep Cherokee $1,640
Jeep Commander $1,486
Jeep Compass $1,324
Jeep Gladiator $1,650
Jeep Grand Cherokee $1,414

Jeep Patriot $1,280
Jeep Wrangler $1,256

The safety of your Jeep

Jeep vehicles are tough and can plow through most road conditions, as well as handle off-roading adventures. Unfortunately, however, not all of these utilitarian vehicles’ models rate highly in terms of safety.

One of the most popular models, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4wd was given only 3 out of 5 stars for its safety in a rollover crash by the National Highway Traffic Administration.

However, other 2021 models such as the Grand Cherokee and Compass scored much higher ratings by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Administration.

Each of these vehicles was given “Good” ratings by the IIHS and 5 out of 5 stars for overall side crash. Both vehicles, however, scored only 3 out of 5 stars for their safety in a rollover crash situation.

Some standard safety features you can expect to find on all newer Jeep models include:

  • Advanced multi-stage front airbags
  • Side supplemental airbags
  • Body-on-frame construction
  • Energy-absorbing steering wheel and column
  • Energy-absorbing front rail tips
  • Integrated front restraint system with 3-point seatbelts for all passengers
  • Pre-tensioners and load-limiting retractors on the front seat backs
  • Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
  • Off-road tested emergency brake system
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM)

How likely you are to file a claim when you drive a specific type of car will be associated with safety features. Fortunately, Jeep has good ratings for features that come standard in its vehicle offerings.

Several Jeep models, like the Sonata and Palisade, have received five-out-of-five stars in overall crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Several models, including the Elantra, Kona, and Tucson, have received Top Safety Rating picks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

How location affects your Jeep insurance

Living in certain states could earn you a lower car insurance premium, while your rates could be higher in other areas. Carriers will determine the pricing based on local crime rates, traffic patterns, and the number of claims filed in an area.
