How We Score the Best Car Insurance Companies of 2024

We wanted to develop a score that reflects what you, the consumer, are looking for. You want a company that’s easy to talk to, keeps its promises, and values its customers. That’s why we ranked over 200 companies in each of these areas, to help with finding the best car insurance:

  • Accessibility measures how easy each company is to work with. Companies with 24/7 claims reporting, a strong social media presence, and extended hours (beyond the boring old 9-to-5) scored higher.
  • Strength measures whether or not a company trusts its reputation to speak for itself. Companies who work with independent agents (putting themselves up against fair competition), have high financial security ratings, and have spent more than 20 years in business rank higher.
  • Service measures how happy the company’s customers are with their service. We aggregated rankings from around the web to get a snapshot of which companies are going above and beyond.

We’re not swayed by advertising dollars or under-the-table PR conversations. All of the information we used is publicly available on the internet. We just went to the trouble of putting it in one place for you, so you can use it to make smart decisions about your car insurance.

Understanding the Scores for Each Car/Auto Insurance Company

We wanted to recognize the companies going above and beyond, not just the ones failing to meet the mark. 5 points (stars) are possible in each area, for a total of 15 points. Here’s what each rating means in each area:

  • 1 star: Below Average
  • 2 stars: Average
  • 3 stars: Above Average
  • 4 stars: Excellent
  • 5 stars: Superior. This company earns the Trusted Choice Seal of Approval.

Get to Know Our List of the Top 15 Car Insurance Companies

1. Travelers Car Insurance

Travelers was the only company in our rankings to earn a perfect score in the car, home and business insurance categories, easily nabbing them the top spot. Travelers has one of the best websites in the biz, a spectacular reputation for customer service, and rock-solid financial strength.

They even have an "A++" rating from AM Best, the highest possible ranking. All that and they choose to sell their products exclusively through independent insurance agents.

That shows that they trust their product to stand head and shoulders above the competition without them having to rig the game with their own proprietary sales reps.

Travelers was founded in 1853, making them one of the oldest companies on this list. They’re also one of the largest: They offer insurance in 5 countries and have over 30,000 employees dedicated to serving you.

2. Liberty Mutual Car Insurance

Liberty Mutual ranks as our first runner-up because of their financial strength and user-friendly tools. They’re the third-largest property and casualty insurance company in the United States. (Property and casualty coverage includes car, home, and life insurance.)

That means that they’re a Fortune 100 company with about 50,000 employees worldwide. Luckily, their website isn’t nearly as intimidating as those numbers might suggest.

They offer easy online quotes and clearly spell out what each type of policy will or won’t get you on their life insurance homepage. Liberty Mutual is rated "A" by AM Best.

Advantages of picking Liberty Mutual for your car insurance include a generous good driver policy—up to 30% off—and a 12-month rate guarantee.

3. Nationwide Car Insurance

Nationwide is yet another practically perfect runner-up. Their superior online services, size, stability and choice to work with independent insurance agents pushed them close to the top of our rankings. Nationwide is especially good if you’re looking for car insurance discounts, with potential savings clearly spelled out on their site.

Advertised discounts include ones for good students and for taking defensive driving courses. Like Erie, their size and range of products lets you mix and match coverage for maximum discounts and benefits for you. They’re rated "A+" by AM Best.

If you or your family speaks Spanish as a first language, Nationwide is one of the only insurers on this list that offers a fully bilingual website. That makes it easier to get covered and file a claim, especially in the aftermath of an accident.

4. USAA Car Insurance

USAA ranks in our top five thanks in part to its century-long standing in the insurance industry. The carrier's financial strength is also remarkable. A few years ago, USAA's net worth surpassed $35 billion. AM Best also awards them the highest possible rating of "A++" in terms of financial strength and stability.

USAA has consistently high ratings in terms of customer service as well. The carrier's original focus was auto insurance, so they've had ample time to perfect their coverage in that department. USAA offers all the standard auto insurance coverages customers may need, including comprehensive, collision, liability, and uninsured motorist. There are several discounts available for car insurance through USAA.

Since 1922, USSA has been offering auto insurance, but the carrier has since greatly expanded, now offering a variety of coverage solutions including homeowners insurance, umbrella insurance, health insurance, and more.

5. Progressive Car Insurance

One of the most recognizable insurance companies in America, Progressive landed within the top five spots on our list because of their top-notch AM Best rating ("A+") and their 24/7 service.

Progressive is known for exceptionally speedy claims service and their willingness to provide insurance to just about everyone, even if you’ve had trouble getting insured elsewhere. They work with independent insurance agents to help you get the coverage you need.

Progressive started insuring cars in 1937. Today they also offer home, business and life insurance along with a variety of niche products. If you enjoy camping and off-roading, consider bundling your car insurance in with Progressive’s RV, ATV and snowmobile policies.

6. Erie Car Insurance

Erie ranks high on our list because of the truly spectacular service, access and stability that they offer their customers. They have an exceptional "A+" rating from AM Best, the insurance industry’s credit rating agency. That makes them a safe bet for your car insurance.

Their website was particularly impressive: In addition to offering online quotes, their services for existing customers were also easy to find, including 24/7 claims reporting, a car repair shop locator, and online payments. They also have extensive evening and weekend customer service hours.

Erie Insurance was founded back in 1925 with the explicit mission of providing great customer service to Pennsylvanians. Today they’re a Fortune 500 company offering car, life, business and home insurance through thousands of independent agents nationwide.

Erie offers a wide variety of insurance products, so they’re a great choice if you’re looking to bundle multiple types of insurance (like home and car) at a discount.

7. Allstate Car Insurance

Allstate is another United States insurance giant. We picked them for a high-ranking spot because, despite their enormous size (79,000 staff and independent insurance agents), their customer service has stayed personal and user-friendly.

They offer 24/7 customer support by phone and online portal, and you can even download an app to manage your insurance on the go. Their website is also fully available in Spanish. Allstate is rated "A+" by AM Best, one of the highest ratings available.

Allstate was founded in 1931. Today they offer a massive variety of products to choose from, including condo, renters, motorcycle and car insurance.

For those who like to DIY, their website is full of useful tools, including a car insurance discounts checklist, a rate comparison tool, and a step-by-step guide to getting covered. Allstate’s website will leave you feeling like an empowered customer (even if you don’t ultimately choose their product).

8. Geico Car Insurance

Geico claimed the number eight spot on our list thanks to their above-average customer satisfaction ratings on a recent J.D. Power survey. The carrier also has a long history in the industry, dating all the way back to 1936.

Beyond the standard car insurance coverages, Geico offers optional add-ons like rental reimbursement, emergency roadside assistance, and mechanical breakdown insurance. They also offer a generous number of discounts, with an airbag discount that can save you up to 23% on your coverage.

Geico offers coverage well beyond just auto. The carrier also offers many types of property insurance, as well as business coverages.

9. State Farm Car Insurance

State Farm also ranked in our top 10 thanks in part to its century-long run in the insurance industry, dating back to 1922. The carrier also received above-average customer satisfaction ratings for purchasing auto insurance on a recent J.D. Power survey.

Beyond offering just the core car insurance coverages, State Farm also offers rental car coverage and rideshare insurance, for drivers that work for Uber, Lyft, etc., and need additional protection. State Farm provides tons of discount options for their auto insurance as well as two distinct programs for safe drivers and young drivers.

State Farm is known as the largest personal auto insurance company in the US. The carrier has also ranked third-highest among the eight large insurance companies reviewed by J.D. Power in their 2020 US Insurance Shopping Study.

10. Amica Car Insurance

Rounding out our top 10 list for car insurance companies is Amica, a carrier that dates all the way back to 1907. Amica received an "A+" or "excellent" rating in terms of financial strength from AM Best and offers coverage for just about all of your personal needs, including not only auto insurance but also pet insurance, marine insurance, wedding and event insurance, and much more.

Amica offers generous discounts on their auto insurance and 24/7 claims reporting, making customer service highly accessible for their policyholders. Beyond the standard car insurance coverages, Amica also offers gap insurance, full glass coverage to replace your windshield, and roadside assistance coverage.

Amica's website is also well laid out and highly intuitive for customers to find what they're looking for. Customers can get a quote right through the website and chat with a Virtual Assistant online if they have coverage questions or need to file a claim.

11. MAPFRE Car Insurance

MAPFRE offers specialty programs for car insurance, including a disappearing deductible program that pays credits towards a policyholder's deductible for each accident-free year of their coverage, up to $300 max. Their ePics program allows customers to receive virtual appraisals of their vehicle's damage after an accident, expediting the claims process.

MAPFRE also boasts excellent ratings from official organizations, including an "A" from AM Best and an "A+" from the BBB. The carrier offers several discount options on its auto insurance and 24/7 claims reporting with fast response times.

The carrier not only offers auto insurance, but also property insurance, travel insurance, business insurance, boat insurance, and more. MAPFRE's roots in the insurance industry extend all the way back to 1972.

12. American Family Car Insurance

American Family has been rated "A" or "excellent" by both AM Best and the BBB. In addition to the standard car insurance coverages, American Family also provides gap coverage, rental reimbursement coverage, emergency road service coverage, and accidental death and dismemberment coverage.

American Family offers multiple discounts on its car insurance as well, including up to 23% savings on both policies for customers who bundle their auto coverage with home insurance. The carrier also boasts good customer feedback and 24/7 claims service.

The insurance company's roots in the insurance industry date back to 1927, giving them almost a century of experience. With its many coverage options and excellent feedback and ratings, American Family is certainly a top-choice carrier for many types of customers.

13. Chubb Car Insurance

Chubb's history in the insurance industry is extremely extensive, dating all the way back to 1882. The carrier boasts the highest possible rating of "A++" from AM Best and an "A+" from the BBB.

Chubb offers many perks on its auto insurance, including Original Equipment Manufacturer replacement coverage to repair and restore your vehicle as close to its original version as possible after a covered accident. The carrier also offers special classic car coverage for older, valuable vehicles.

The insurance company offers 24/7/365 customer service, regardless of where you're located in the world when you need to file a claim. Chubb's coverage catalog is also quite extensive, including multiple types of property insurance, valuables insurance, business insurance coverages, cyber insurance, life and health insurance, and more. Basically, if you need a certain type of coverage, Chubb's got it.

14. Farmers Car Insurance

Farmers Insurance has been in the industry since 1928, giving them just shy of a century's experience. Farmers boasts excellent ratings of an "A" from AM Best and an "A+" from the BBB as well as tons of positive customer feedback.

We were really impressed by Farmers' selection of discounts for auto insurance. The carrier offers a teen driver discount of up to 20%, a safety features discount of up to 15%, and even an alternative fuel discount of up to 10%, just to name a few. Farmers sells its coverage through a team of independent insurance agents, which we also love.

Famers is one of the largest home and auto insurers in the nation. The carrier offers 24/7 claims reporting, strong financial stability, and a wide range of coverages including specialty home insurance, earthquake insurance, and umbrella insurance. Farmers allows customers to pair umbrella insurance with auto insurance for customers who want to increase their liability coverage limits.

15. Country Financial Car Insurance

Rounding out our list of top picks for car insurance is Country Financial, a carrier that dates all the way back to 1925. Country Financial scored ratings of "A+" from both AM Best and the BBB, which automatically makes their coverage worth a closer look.

Beyond the standard auto insurance coverages, Country Financial also offers "The Keeper" coverage to replace a brand-new car if it gets totaled in an accident. We were impressed by this offering from Country Financial, since most carriers will only pay up to the current value of a totaled car. Country Financial also offers other policy enhancements like safety glass coverage if your windshield gets damaged, vehicle rental and trip interruption coverage if you get into an accident away from home, and personal effects coverage in case your property like a laptop gets stolen from your vehicle.

Thanks to its strong financial stability, coverage options, high ratings by official industries, and 24/7 claims reporting customer service, Country Financial earned its well-deserved spot as the last entry on our list. If you need coverage beyond auto insurance, Country Financial offers a wide catalog including farm coverages, business coverages, life and health coverages, specialty coverages, and more.

How to Choose the Best Car Insurance Company & Policy

When it comes to finding the best car insurance, you'll ultimately want to select a carrier that's reliable and will deliver on its coverage promises to you. Evaluate a car insurance company based on more criteria than just their rates and available discounts. You'll want to critically examine their official ratings and customer review history, for starters.

If you're asking, "What's the best car insurance near me?", begin by comparing these factors about carriers first:

Premium rates

Of course, the cost of your coverage will be important to your budget. Browse multiple car insurance companies and compare different premium rates before making your choice. An independent insurance agent can actually do this work for you.

Official ratings

You should ideally check out a car insurance company's official ratings, such as through websites like AM Best and the Better Business Bureau, before buying from them. These organizations can provide helpful insight as to whether a carrier has successfully maintained good relations with its customer base and more.

Customer reviews

Read through customer reviews of a car insurance company as well before you commit to buying a policy from them. You can find customer reviews and complaints online through many different sources, including your state insurance commissioner's website.

Company size

Don't just look at the options provided by major car insurance companies that you've heard of or seen commercials for. Looking into smaller, local car insurance companies can often provide you with more affordable rate options.

Current options

You'll want to shop for car insurance every few years, to be sure that you're getting the best of current rates and coverage options. Especially if you have any violations or accidents on your record, be sure to browse your car insurance options every three to five years so you can get the best rates.

Frequently Asked Car Insurance Questions

Before you head off on your hunt for the best car insurance for you, check out our answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about car insurance and the best carriers around.

Our best car insurance review revealed that the most reliable automobile insurance is offered by Travelers car insurance. Travelers offers excellent customer service, an "A++" rating from AM Best, and ongoing solid financial strength. They were the only car insurance company on our list to score a perfect rating in the car, home, and business insurance categories.

Travelers insurance company has been around since 1853, which has given them ample time to perfect their car insurance offerings as well as their customer service standards. The insurance company is also huge, currently offering car insurance in five different countries.

USAA car insurance has been recently rated as the car insurance company with the highest rate of claims and customer satisfaction. USAA puts its customers first and has a positive track record of reviews to demonstrate proof. The carrier allows customers to file claims at any time through multiple mediums, including online or over the phone, and offers a highly user-friendly mobile app as well.

Our extensive review of multiple top-rated car insurance carriers found Travelers car insurance to be the Number One car insurance company. Not only does Travelers have an extensive history in the industry, dating back to 1853, but they offer many different coverage options for drivers, including rideshare coverage, new car replacement coverage, gap coverage, and accident forgiveness. These coverages are not offered by every car insurance company, but Travelers allows its customers to personalize their policies in the way that works best for them, all while offering superior service and claims satisfaction ratings.

When your insurance agent or company sends over your proof of insurance, you’re probably not thinking much about this policy number. But it's important to be familiar with your car insurance policy number in case you need it when communicating with your carrier. Your car insurance company uses this unique number to identify your account and policy in case you need to file a claim or make updates to your coverage. If you're unfamiliar with how to locate yours, talk with your independent insurance agent, who can help review your auto insurance policy with you.
