Louisville Car Insurance Provides Liability Coverage

If you own a car in Louisville, you will be required to have liability insurance before you can take it out on the road. Every state has minimum liability coverage requirements and Kentucky is no exception.

These minimums are designed to protect both you and any third party with whom you may be involved in a collision from the financial burdens that a collision can create. You will need to be certain that your Louisville car insurance policy meets these minimum liability requirements.

Louisville, Kentucky Car Insurance Requirements

  • Bodily injury liability: required
  • Property damage liability: required
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): required
  • Uninsured motorist: not required
  • Minimum liability limits: 25/50/10
    • Coverage up to $50,000 for all persons injured in an accident, subject to a limit of $25,000 for one individual, and $10,000 coverage for property damage.
    • Instead of policy limits, policyholders can satisfy the requirement with a combined single limit policy. Amounts vary by state.

Although these state-required minimums may seem high, a major collision,  particularly one that involves injuries or fatalities, has the potential to accrue costs that are far greater than the coverage limits of a basic policy. If you are the responsible driver, you will be expected to cover the excess costs out-of-pocket.

Because such a scenario can lead to financial difficulties or bankruptcy, most insurance experts recommend that you purchase as much liability protection as you can afford.

Louisville Car Insurance Can Provide Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage goes well beyond the limits of basic liability coverage. If you financed the purchase of your car, your lender probably required that you carry comprehensive car insurance for the duration of your loan. Once your loan is paid off, this coverage becomes optional.

Comprehensive insurance provides medical coverage for you and your passengers as well as coverage for damages to your vehicle resulting from an accident, regardless of fault. It also provides compensation for damage to your automobile caused by falling objects, weather-related events, fires, vandalism, and theft.

  • National uninsured motorists: 12.6%
  • Kentucky uninsured motorists: 15.8%

Kentucky has considerably more drivers without insurance than the national average. Even though uninsured motorist coverage isn't required in this state, adding it to your policy will provide the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if you're in an accident and the at-fault driver doesn't have insurance, you will be able to receive compensation for any damages or injuries from your own insurance company.

Most vehicular accidents are caused by speeding, careless driving or driver distractions and are therefore preventable. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to avoid collisions that are caused by the reckless actions of other drivers or hazardous driving conditions.
