Most Midland traffic accidents occur during heavy traffic hours on the area’s highest-volume roads such as Interstate 20 and the Garden City Highway. Even the most defensive drivers can sometimes find it difficult to prevent a collision when sharing these roads with so many other drivers. Accidents can frequently prove costly, but area residents can protect themselves from this financial hardship by carrying a comprehensive Midland, TX car insurance policy.

Insurance agents in the Trusted Choice® network can answer your insurance-related questions, present you with multiple policies to review and offer you professional service.

Texas Car Insurance Costs

  • National average annual premium: $1,311
  • Texas average annual premium: $1,449
  • 17th most expensive premiums in the U.S.

Insurance rates in Texas are a bit higher than the national average but are not necessarily an accurate indicator of what you can expect to pay. Insurers base your premiums on a number of factors, including your age and driving record; your vehicle's make, model and year; and your driving habits.

Is Midland Car Insurance Mandatory?

The state of Texas mandates minimum liability coverage amounts for residents who own vehicles. There are stiff penalties for failure to  the meet these requirements. First offenders face fines of $175 to $350; subsequent offenders are subject to fines of $350 to $1,000, impoundment of their vehicle, and license suspension.

Texas Car Insurance Requirements

  • Bodily injury liability: required
  • Property damage liability: required
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): not required
  • Uninsured motorist: not required
  • Minimum liability limits: 30/60/25
    • Coverage up to $30,000 per accident for one person; coverage up to $60,000 per accident for all persons; coverage up to $25,000 per accident for property damage

The state mandates these minimum coverage amounts to protect drivers from overwhelming financial hardship or the need to file for bankruptcy because of a vehicular accident. In most cases, these minimums are high enough to protect drivers. However, if you are involved in an accident that results in serious injuries or death, you may find the minimum coverage limits insufficient to cover the resulting damage.

If the costs associated with your accident exceed your policy’s liability limits, you will have to pay the difference out of pocket. You can avoid this problem by opting for higher liability coverage limits or by purchasing an umbrella insurance policy.

Why Add Comprehensive Coverage to Your Midland Car Insurance?

If you finance the purchase of your vehicle, lenders will typically require you to have comprehensive coverage. If you own your vehicle outright, the decision about whether to purchase this extra coverage is personal and is dependent on factors such as the value of your vehicle; where and how often you drive it; and where and how you store it when not in use.

The addition of comprehensive coverage to your Midland car insurance policy will provide you with compensation for any damage or loss caused by fire, falling objects, weather-related events, vandalism and theft.

Number of Thefts in Texas

  • National vehicle thefts (per 1,000 registered vehicles): 2.94
  • Texas vehicle thefts (per 1,000 registered vehicles): 3.28

The state has a higher-than-average vehicle theft rate, but the problem is not too serious in Midland. In fact, recently, residents of this city reported only 194 vehicle thefts. This equates to just 1.52 thefts per 1,000 registered vehicles, well below the national average. Despite the low theft rate, however, Midland residents should remember to secure their vehicles properly when not in use.
