Based on the most recent United Health Foundation rankings, North Carolina is the 33rd healthiest state in the nation. Although it’s an improvement over past years, there are still healthcare issues that must be addressed. While this holds true for any state, residents of NC must find affordable ways to care for themselves and their family. Some residents make the choice of going uninsured, although this is risky if a family member suffers a traumatic accident or is diagnosed with a serious illness. So where do you find affordable insurance that still meets your needs?

Consider working an independent agent in the Trusted Choice® network. Unlike “captive” insurance agents, independent agents have the ability to access multiple insurance companies to compare policies and North Carolina medical insurance quotes. Don’t get frustrated by the search for NC health insurance. Instead, contact an independent agent today.

Examining Out-of-Pocket Costs

When looking at health insurance plans, you’ll notice that there are several other costs associated with health insurance other than your monthly premium. Depending on what type of healthcare plan you have, you’ll see that there are varying amounts of co-pays and co-insurance.

Another important term to remember is "deductible." This is the amount that you must pay out of pocket before your health insurance will cover medical procedures. Keep in mind that setting a high deductible means you'll have a greater financial responsibility for your healthcare. The good thing about a high deductible is that it reduces your premium.

In addition to your deductible amount, you might have a co-pay. This is a set payment that you owe the doctor’s office every time you make a visit. If you have a co-insurance, the insurance company pays a certain percentage of each medical expense and you pay the remaining percentage.

North Carolina Health Insurance Options

Choosing a health insurance plan can be difficult. It’s best to take a note of your personal situation and then contact an independent agent. A single male with no medical history won’t need the same health insurance as a growing family of four. Even if you have health insurance through your employer, it doesn’t hurt to contact an independent agent. You may find cheaper North Carolina health insurance.

Traditional health insurance plans include:

  • Preferred provider organization (PPO): This plan requires that you choose a primary physician that operates within the PPO network of healthcare providers. If you choose other providers within the network, you’ll receive a reduced rate. You have the option to work with another doctor, but your expenses will cost more.
  • Health maintenance organization (HMO): With this plan, you’ll also choose a primary physician, but it’s slightly more limiting. To see any other provider, you must receive a referral from your primary physician, but you also have lower premiums and set co-pays.
  • High deductible health plan/health savings account (HDHP/HSA): This plan is very affordable due to a high deductible amount. Preventive care is normally covered, but due to the high deductible, this plan isn’t ideal for someone that frequents the doctor
  • Point of service (POS): You can choose a primary care physician within your network, but also have the ability to work with other healthcare providers. If you visit another doctor or specialist, you must provide receipt of your visit to receive compensation from your insurance company.
