Deans & Homer's staff will contact you to begin the claims process. An independent adjuster may assist in the investigation. The adjuster will often come out to inspect the damaged property to estimate the loss or investigate the scene of the accident.
You should make all reasonable efforts to protect your property from further loss without placing yourself or others at risk. Do not throw any important property away until you have had a chance to discuss the situation with our claims representative as it may be helpful in determining how the loss occurred.
If someone is injured or is making a claim against you, please talk to us before taking any action. You are always free to speak to your own attorney at your expense, but please do not speak to anyone else about the incident until we have had a chance to discuss the matter with you. If you have an incident report, photographs, or security film, please save that for us to review.

|The only reason I did renters insurance through this company was because the complex I was living in already had everything set up through them so it seemed easy and convenient. I just now called to get information about cancelling my policy since I'm moving and I spoke with [someone who] answered the majority of my questions, however she kept cutting me off before I could even finish. I eventually asked her for her name and said she was being rude and shutting me up. Her response was along the lines of "we process hundreds of these requests a day it's really simple". Like okay? Just because it's simple for you since you process these requests hundreds of times a day, doesn't mean it is for me. I'm asking thorough questions to make sure I have a clear understanding. I understand customer service isn't easy, but being polite isn't hard.|
|*Update* after a very damaging and insulting experience with a customer service rep, one of the supervisors reached out to me with a very understanding ear and let me feel my concerns were heard. I'm taking my review to 4 stars and hope to increase to a 5 after some more time as a customer passes and hopefully more positive experiences.|
|Slimy, disgusting company. I was mandated by my apartment complex to garner a policy with this disreputable firm. I confirmed during a phone call the exact date I would be moving out of the residence. It was a tiny crash pad near the medical school I was attending. There was absolutely a definitive move out date one year after I moved in. School ended and thus, I moved out as was noted to my landlord and this bastion of sleaze bags who work at Dean & Homer. They printed up the lease to extend 6 months beyond when we had verbally agreed to and they fooled me. I signed it, not realizing that this was a scammy, sleazy business built on tricking people into signing terms not verbally agreed to. Because of course, everyone wants to pay renters insurance for a unit that they don't live in for months after they move out. This grotesque company sends an email noting that they automatically renew your policy without your consent. So it wasn't enough to nail me on the one lease - there was the hope that I'd miss the spam looking email so they could continue to steal funds from my account indefinitely. Do not do business with this company! They are wretched.|
|One of the worst renters insurance companies ever. My family member had to move due to her apartment becoming uninhabitable because the management company of her complex neglected to make necessary repairs. She received a notice along with 20 plus families on 12/5/2019 saying that the premise no longer safe for living in and that they all had 10 days to vacate. There was an adjuster there 12/15/19 taking pictures of all of the apartments with water damage and mold. She never received anything in the mail or follow up phone calls to guide her through the claims process. It's been about a month and after Deans and Homers adjuster took pictures on 12/15/2019 and she has yet to receive any type of funding. She finally got the letter that was supposedly mailed to her via email that was dated 12/5/19 (this was received by email on 1/8/20.) This company lacks professionalism or integrity in their practice. She's still trying to get money for complete loss of her apartment. The only time she hears from them is when she reaches out to them. This company has taken her money and has not done a darn thing to help alleviate her anxiety with finances in finding a new place to live. They've just added to her problems. Why would they do that?? SHAME ON YOU!!!|

We award Deans & Homer a final rating of 2 out of 5 stars. The two stars are mainly earned from their extensive history in the insurance industry and their high rating through the BBB. It's also a pro that Deans & Homer offers both personal and commercial coverages.
However, the carrier's catalogue is rather small and they don't share information about offering discounts. While we love that they work with local independent insurance agents, we don't like that they're not rated by AM Best or their dated, sparse website. More disturbing, though, is the large volume of negative customer reviews.
Overall, we recommend working with an independent insurance agent to survey other options for quality coverage, and skip looking into Deans & Homer. Especially if good customer service is important to you.
