What to Know About Esurance

Esurance was founded in 1999, giving the carrier just over two decades’ worth of experience in the insurance industry today. Its parent company, Allstate, is extremely well known across the nation and has been operational since 1931. Esurance currently offers its coverage in 43 states and has expanded its reach rapidly since its start in the industry. Its financial strength has grown a lot over the years as well, and A.M. Best now ranks Esurance within the $2 billion or greater financial size category.

The official website states that Esurance currently has more than 500,000 auto insurance policies in-force. Esurance’s LinkedIn page states that the company size falls into the 1,001-5,000 employees category. The insurance company prides itself for its digital experience, including its official website and mobile apps. Esurance also boasts that customers can get insurance quotes within an average of six minutes through their website.

Because of its wide reach, financial strength, and well-known parent company, Esurance now has reputation as a respected and financially stable carrier with a strong outlook for the future. A.M. Best, the leading global credit rating agency monitoring the insurance industry, gives Esurance an “A+” rating, indicating the carrier is a superior choice for insurance customers. A high rating from A.M. Best assures customers that Esurance is capable of offering guaranteed, secure coverage from a trustworthy and reputable carrier.

Established in 1899, A.M. Best is one of the oldest rating companies in the world. Reviews from A.M. Best indicate an insurance company’s financial strength and creditworthiness, and are based on comprehensive evaluations of the company’s operating performance, business profile, and balance sheet. For customers who aren’t as familiar with insurance companies’ respective reputations, A.M. Best’s ratings system allows them to make an informed decision about who they can trust to meet their needs in the short term, and also to remain a strong, financially sound company in the long term.

What Discounts Does Esurance Offer?

Esurance FAQ

What is Esurance's average claim response timeframe?

Esurance allows customers to file claims over the phone or through their mobile app at any time. Their official website states that customers will be contacted within 24 hours after filing a claim, and that most claims are even approved within just one day.

What is Esurance's customer service availability?

Esurance provides 24/7 claims reporting for their customers through their mobile app or over the phone. Their main customer service hotline is available at generous hours every day of the week. The carrier also has a social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, making them even more accessible to customers.

What is Esurance's claims process?

Esurance allows their customers to file claims 24/7 through multiple mediums. However, the carrier’s official website does not outline their claims process, other than detailing how to file. If customers have further questions about filing claims or what to expect after they file, they can call or contact the carrier by other means, or reach out to their independent insurance agent.

Does Esurance create a user-friendly experience for customers?

Esurance’s official website is intuitive and easy to navigate. However, the insurance company could benefit from providing more information through their website. For example, the outline of the insurance company’s claims process is not listed. Filing claims directly through the website also does not seem to be an option for customers, which puts Esurance a step behind many modern insurance companies. The carrier does promise to return contact to its customers quickly, however, and makes itself available on multiple platforms across social media.

Does Esurance have good auto insurance?

Esurance offers several types of coverage, but is perhaps best known for their auto insurance, thanks to their parent company, Allstate. The insurance company provides the following benefits under their auto policies:

  • Collision coverage
  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Emergency roadside assistance coverage
  • Rental car coverage
  • Loan/lease gap coverage
  • Medical payments coverage
  • Personal injury protection coverage
  • Bodily injury liability coverage
  • Property damage liability coverage
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist liability coverage
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage coverage

Your independent insurance agent can help you find out even more information about Esurance’s auto insurance, as well as their other available insurance products.

Is Esurance a good insurance company?

Esurance has received high ratings through both A.M. Best and the BBB, and has a large volume of insurance policies in-force. Many glowing customer reviews can be spotted across the web, which makes sense because Esurance prides itself on its customer service efficiency. Its many discounts and variety of coverage offerings across most states also earns Esurance a reputation as being a good insurance company.

“Esurance has been great! They always work with us on our rates. We don't have any complaints about their service.”

“This company makes it extremely easy for someone with anxiety to purchase a policy without having to make a phone call. Their website is very easy to navigate and understand. They also rebated some of my premium since the COVID-19 pandemic. Very pleased with them.”

Better Business Bureau
“I have had Esurance for a few years now and am basically happy with their service. However, I recently discovered that if you make a payment online - something they encourage at every opportunity - they automatically keep your credit card information on file and set you up for automatic payments. You should be aware that once you have made any online payment you will be charged automatically and a month in advance for any and all future payments. I spoke to an Esurance representative and was advised that there is no way to opt out of this automatic payment - opting in is the only option when paying online. I thought Esurance was a reputable company but now not so sure. They tell you the automatic payment plan is for your convenience. Might be so if you did not end up paying interest on a payment that isn't due for another month. In the meantime you can be assured Esurance is gaining interest every day at your expense. I do not believe that is how a reputable business operates or treats its customers. You must call Esurance to get out of this plan - but don't worry -once you opt out they will call you a month in advance of your payment due date and try to get you to pay early anyway - for your convenience.”

“I had to get another insurance for my daughter's car. I was not keen on not having control on making my payments but that is the way Esurance handles their accounts. I have been their customer for 2 years and they have been wonderful. Kind, professional, experienced, up-to-date, and in the know. Prices are affordable! That feels good!”

Clearsurance
“If you are looking for an insurance company that rolls over and accepts fault in a car accident you are not at fault for then Esurance is right for you. If you are looking for an insurance company to fight for you and not blindly accept fault and twist reality to accept fault then I would keep looking. This insurance company is an absolute disgrace. I do not know how operating in this manner makes financial sense for the company unless it is entirely based on the one-time payment to raise someone's rates. As soon as I find a better insurance company I will be tossing this one away where it belongs.”

TrustedChoice.com's Final Review

We award Esurance a final rating of 4 out of 5 stars. For starters, the insurance company has more than two decades’ of experience in the insurance industry and has received extremely high ratings through both A.M. Best and the BBB. However, there have been a concerning volume of customer complaints filed against the carrier through the BBB in recent years, and Esurance is not currently accredited through the organization. While customer feedback is somewhat mixed, it seems the majority of customers are satisfied with both their coverage and the level of customer service they receive from Esurance. The insurance company’s option for 24/7 claims reporting through multiple mediums is a huge pro, however we’re puzzled by the fact that they don’t offer the service right through their website. Overall, we say that if you’re in need of any of their insurance products and live in an area where coverage is offered, certainly consider looking into Esurance as an option for your next trusted carrier with your independent insurance agent.
