Many people in Kentucky enjoy living and traveling in recreational vehicles. In fact, residents of the Bluegrass State spend more than $67 million a year on RV sales and service. If you own a camper or motorhome, you can protect your investment and your finances with a good RV insurance policy.

Local independent agents are free to work with many of the best RV insurance companies in Kentucky to help you find a great policy at a competitive price. Find an independent insurance agent near you to start comparing customized quotes.

How Much Does RV Insurance Cost in Kentucky?

Because RVs serve a dual purpose as a home as well as a vehicle, they need the specialized insurance coverage that only an RV insurance policy can provide. Your policy can be customized to meet your specific coverage needs according to the type of recreational vehicle you own and how you use it.

RV insurance costs can range from a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars a year. While it may seem that the upper range for coverage is expensive, these policies typically include a wide range of coverage making them well worth the cost.

Your price for RV insurance will be based on factors such as:

  • The type and class of RV you are insuring and its length, weight, and value
  • The estimated value of the personal property you keep in your RV's living quarters
  • Whether you are a part-time or a full-time RV user
  • Your driving record and insurance claims history
  • Which, if any, coverage options you want to include in your policy

Someone who is insuring a camper van that they only use for family vacations once or twice a year will pay much less for coverage than a full-time RV owner who plans to tour the US in their luxury motorhome.

To find out how much it will cost to insure your RV, you can contact insurance providers to request customized quotes.

Is RV Insurance Required in Kentucky?

If your RV is a non-motorized towable, such as a pop-up camper, travel trailer, or fifth-wheel, you are not required by Kentucky state law to cover it with an RV policy. Instead, you can purchase a trailer insurance endorsement on the insurance policy of the vehicle that will be used to tow it.

However, if your RV is self-propelled, like a motorhome or camper van, it will be held to the same minimum coverage requirements as your car or truck.

What Kind of Coverage Can a Standard RV Insurance Policy Provide in Kentucky?

For motorized recreational vehicles, the only protection that will be included in a minimum coverage RV insurance policy is what is required by the state. This means that a basic RV insurance policy will only provide:

  • Auto liability insurance: This covers other people’s medical bills and property damage if you cause a collision while driving your RV. Your policy must include, at a minimum:
    • $25,000 in bodily injury liability per person
    • $50,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
    • $25,000 in property damage liability per accident
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance: This covers medical bills, lost wages, and other related expenses if you or your passengers are injured in a collision, regardless of fault. Your PIP must include, at a minimum:
    • $10,000 in personal injury protection insurance (PIP)

Instead of the 25/50/25 liability coverage mentioned above, Kentucky will allow you to purchase blanket liability coverage of $60,000 per incident.

Keep in mind, however, that RVs are larger and heavier than most vehicles on the road. This means that if you cause a collision while driving one, the accident is likely to result in a lot of property damage and potentially serious injuries to others, which can easily exceed what a minimum coverage policy can pay for.

That is why many RV owners in Kentucky opt to purchase liability coverage in much higher amounts than the state requires. Some even supplement that coverage with umbrella insurance.

What Else Can a Kentucky RV Insurance Policy Cover?

In addition to the mandatory coverage mentioned above, your RV insurance company will enable you to create a customized policy by including your choice of a wide variety of coverage options.

Some of the coverage options you may want to consider include:

  • Physical damage coverage: This covers damage to your RV. If you have financed your vehicle and are still making payments on it, your lender will likely require you to have physical damage coverage. This includes:
    • Collision coverage: This covers repair or replacement costs if your RV is damaged or totaled in a collision, regardless of fault.
    • Comprehensive coverage: This covers repair or replacement costs if your RV is damaged or totaled by a non-collision hazard like a tornado or a flood.
  • Towing and roadside assistance: RVs usually require specialized towing and service if they break down while you’re out on the road. This optional insurance lets you rest assured that a service call won’t set you back financially.

RV insurance options specifically for full-time RVers

  • Personal liability coverage: This provides the same personal liability coverage that people typically get through a conventional homeowners or renters insurance policy. It is available to anyone who lives in their RV at least 6 months out of the year.
  • Contents coverage: For those who live in their RVs full time, this coverage is particularly useful to consider since most of your belongings are kept in your vehicle. It can pay to repair or replace these personal belongings if they are lost or damaged because of a covered event like a severe storm or a burglary.

RV insurance options specifically for part-time RVers

  • Vacation liability coverage: This ensures that you will have sufficient coverage if you are responsible for accidental property damage or injuries to others while staying at an RV park. It does this by supplementing the personal liability coverage in your home or renters insurance policy. Some RV campgrounds require guests to have it.
  • Contents coverage: Those who use their RVs part-time will not need to buy as much coverage as someone who is a full-timer since most of their valuable possessions will be left at home. This coverage can pay to repair or replace the personal belongings in your RV if they are lost or damaged because of a covered event like a fire or severe storm.

Though it is not required, if you live in your RV full time, you will want to be sure to have the same sort of coverage that you would have with a traditional home insurance policy. This can prevent you from facing large financial losses and potentially losing your life savings if disaster strikes.

What Is RV Gap Insurance in Kentucky?

If your RV is totaled in a covered event, so long as your policy includes physical damage coverage, you can be compensated for its actual value just before the damaging incident.

However, if you financed the purchase of your RV and currently owe more for it than its assessed value, that can leave you still paying on an RV loan for a vehicle you no longer have.

RV gap insurance was designed to solve this problem by bridging the gap between what you owe for your RV and what it is worth. That way, your RV loan will be paid off in full when you receive compensation for a total loss.

This coverage is typically only needed during the first couple of years of new RV ownership when depreciation is the fastest.
