Proper Trailer Use and Safety

Since 1975, nearly 20,000 people have been killed, hunreds of thousands injured and millions of dollars in property damage have resulted in improper trailer use and motorists failing to use them safely. With no clear, national trailer safety standards and the ability for drivers to use any kind of trailer -- even homemade ones -- the safety issue is too real to ignore. Trailers can be dangerous when:

  • They are improperly attached to the vehicle
  • The wrong vehile is used to tow them
  • They begin to sway or tilt
  • They are improperly or overloaded
  • The trailer's lights or signaling systems are not working

Always be sure your trailer is properly secured to your vehicle and that the breaks, lighting and other systems are functional before hitting the road.

What is Trailer Insurance?

Since most basic car or truck insurance policies do not extend to your trailer, it's important to insure your towable unit against accident or injury. You may be able to find a car insurance policy that covers a small, utility trailer you use only occassionally, but be sure to read those coverage options carefully to be sure you do not have any significant gaps.

For larger trailers such as horse or livestock trailers, boat trailers, cargo trailers, flat-beds and gooseneck trailers, a separate, more comprehensive policy is more appropriate.

If you use your trailer as part of business operations, you might be required to carry commercial trailer insurance on it. Be sure to check with your local Nevada department of motor vehicles to find out the regulations regarding your particular trailer.

What Does Trailer Insurance Cover?

The kind of coverage you need for your trailer depends on the kind you have and how you use it. Some of the insurance coverage you may need for your trailer includes liability, collision and comprehensive, just like your car or truck. While collision covers damage from an accident, comprehensive will provide coverage for things like hail and storm damage, theft and vandalism.

The risk of liability is often overlooked because you tow rather than drive a trailer, and it does not have its own engine. However, trailers have been known to become unhitched and can cause extensive damage. Your auto liability most likely does not cover damage caused by your unhitched trailer.

Can I Find Coverage for My Particular Trailer in Nevada?

Unless you handmade your trailer (which is not recommended outside of farm use), you can most likely find a Nevada insurance provider willing to cover it. The vast majority of trailers purchased by retailers can be insured. Those include:

  • Utility trailers
  • Cargo trailers
  • Boat and ATV trailers
  • Horse and livestock trailers
  • Flatbeds
  • Gooseneck
  • Auto-haulers

What Will My Trailer Insurance Quote Look Like?

The quotes you will see for trailer insurance depend on several factors, including:

  • The size and value of your trailer
  • Where and how often you use it
  • Your driving history and past claims

A quote for a small, utility trailer used a few times a year will be far lower than a quote for a horse trailer used once per week. Also, you can save considerably on your trailer insurance by keeping a clean driving record. It's a good idea to shop around and compare several trailer insurance quotes from different providers to ensure you are receiving the best rates and coverage.
