They are useful for transporting such things as recreational vehicles, boats, work equipment, and livestock. The New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles requires residents to register their trailers but exempts them from mandatory liability insurance. All the same, a trailer insurance policy can be quite important if you wish to protect your assets and finances.

What Is New Jersey Trailer Insurance?

Trailer insurance is designed specifically to meet the coverage needs of trailer owners. This coverage is frequently included as a rider you can add to your vehicle insurance policy. You have the option to purchase only the coverage you find necessary and can build a policy that best suits your trailer coverage needs.

What Does New Jersey Trailer Insurance Cover?

Trailer insurance may be included as part of your car, truck, boat, ATV or business insurance policy, or it may need to be purchased as a separate endorsement. These policies will typically offer a few different types of coverage options, including:

  • Liability coverage: If your trailer strikes another vehicle while you are using it, it may cause extensive property damage and injuries. This can happen if the trailer separates from its towing vehicle, if you miscalculate the length of your trailer and strike another vehicle while changing lanes, or even if you cut a corner too close when driving on residential streets. Trailer liability coverage can provide compensation for any damages or injuries you cause to others as well as any associated court costs and legal fees.
  • Comprehensive coverage: Some trailers, such as camper trailers, are very expensive. Comprehensive coverage will provide you with compensation if your trailer is significantly damaged by a covered event such as falling objects, severe weather, fire, theft or vandalism. If your trailer is less than 3 years old, many insurance companies will allow you to purchase total loss replacement coverage which will provide funds sufficient to fully replace it with a new one, instead of just compensation in the amount of your trailer’s actual depreciated value.
  • Contents coverage: This coverage is particularly important if you will be using your trailer to transport valuable property that is not otherwise insured. For example, if you own a speed-boat but prefer not to carry boat insurance, it's a good idea to purchase trailer contents insurance to protect your watercraft while you are hauling it to and from the water. If you will be using your trailer to transport livestock, contents insurance can provide you with compensation if they are injured or killed in an accident.
  • Roadside assistance coverage: This coverage will provide you with the specialized emergency assistance necessary if your trailer gets stuck or needs to be towed.
  • Branch collision coverage: This will provide coverage if your trailer is significantly damaged by a low hanging branch while you are driving with it in tow. This is ideal for large trailers like horse trailers, particularly if they are very expensive.

How Much Does New Jersey Trailer Insurance Cost?

Trailer insurance premiums can vary greatly according to the type of trailer you have and amount of coverage you purchase. You can expect coverage for a small, personal-use trailer to cost less than $10 a month, whereas insurance for a commercial-use trailer or horse trailer will be significantly more expensive. Some factors that will influence the cost of your premiums include:

  • The type of trailer you own
  • Where and how often you use your trailers
  • The type and value of the cargo you intend to carry on your trailer
  • The length and width and weight of your trailer
  • Your trailer’s make, model, and year
  • Your personal driving record
  • The coverage options you purchase
  • The amount of your deductible
