ATV Accident Statistics

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

  • More than 100,000 emergency room visits every year are attributed to ATV-related accidents and injuries.
  • Nearly 30,000 of those ATV-related emergency room visits are for children age 16 or younger.
  • In ND, more than 20 people were killed while riding ATVs between 2007 and 2010 alone.

Why Is ATV Insurance Important?

Some of the same reasons that make riding ATVs so thrilling are also the reasons they can be so dangerous.

  • ATVs can travel off-road on unknown terrain.
  • ATVs are heavy, powerful machines.
  • ATV rollovers can cause serious injury and even death.
  • Inexperience in operating ATVs can lead to accidents.

Only an ATV insurance policy can help you recover quickly following an accident. It can also be there to help you if you cause another person injury or property damage while operating your ATV.

Am I Required to Carry ATV Insurance?

North Dakota state law does not required you to carry ATV insurance, but it is one of those important protections you should not be without.

The state does have the following to say about ATV regulations, however:

  • All riders under the age of 18 (passengers and operator) must wear a helmet.
  • All ATVs must be registered; registration must be renewed once every two years unless they are being driven only on private property.
  • To operate an ATV a person 12 years of age to under 16 years of age must possess an ATV safety certificate.
  • No passengers are allowed, unless the ATV is designed for carrying a passenger.
  • ATV use on roads is limited to county and township roads marked 45 mph and below. ATV use is also allowed in the highway right of way, bottom of the ditch or along the outslope. It is illegal to operate on the shoulder or inside the slope. Certain other restrictions apply.

What Does ATV Insurance Cover?

Most insurance providers offer a number of coverage options as you build your ATV policy, including:

  • Liability coverage: This can help pay for costs associated with causing injury or property damage to another person while operating your ATV. Because ATV riding includes a high risk of injury, it is important to include liability coverage in any ATV insurance policy you may purchase.
  • Collision coverage: This can help pay for repairs to your ATV if it is damaged in an accident.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This can help pay for repairs to or replacement of your ATV if it is damage or totaled by fire, extreme weather, theft, vandalism or any other covered event.

Can I Find Coverage for My ATV?

Since their introduction to U.S. markets in 1982, the number and various styles and models of ATVs have significantly increased. You should be able to find a policy that covers any of the following common ATVs:

  • Three-wheelers
  • Four-wheelers
  • Six- and even eight-wheelers
  • UTVs
  • Triangle track ATVs
  • Side-by-sides

If your ATV isn't included, you can probably still get coverage. Check with an insurance agent to see if coverage is available for your particular vehicle.

What Will My ATV Insurance Quote Look Like?

Because no two ATVs and their riders are exactly alike, neither will any two ATV insurance quotes be identical. Most insurance companies take several factors into consideration as they calculate your insurance quote, including:

  • Your driving record
  • The top speed of the ATV
  • How often it is used
  • Your credit history
  • The ages of the allowed drivers
  • Your age
  • Your gender

Generally, ATV insurance can range from as little as $70 a year for a policy for an older female who uses her ATV infrequently to as much as several hundred dollars a year for a young male who goes off-roading every weekend.

Prices and coverage options can vary greatly from insurance company to insurance company, so it's a good idea to shop around and compare several quotes from different providers.
