North Dakota Trailer Statistics

The following trailer statistics are available from the U.S. Department of Transportation:

  • As of 2003 (the most current year for which statistics are available), North Dakota had about 26,000 commercial registered trailers.
  • There were more than 31,000 light farm trailers, car trailers, utility trailers, etc. registered in the state.
  • There are nearly 19,000 house trailers on ND streets.
  • In total, there are more than 76,000 trailers in ND, not counting the thousands owned by the state and federal governments.

Is Trailer Insurance Required in North Dakota?

Owners of private-use trailers are not obligated to have insurance per North Dakota State law. They may need to have commercial trailer insurance, however, so be sure to check with your local department of motor vehicles regarding specific requirements.

Owners must register all trailers with the state before they can legally take them on public roads and highways, however. Even though you may not have to carry trailer insurance, it offers the type of protection that few trailer users can afford to be without.

Finding Insurance for Different Types of Trailers

Unless you have handcrafted your trailer from spare parts sitting around the farm, you should be able to find a North Dakota insurance provider willing to insure it. Most insurance companies have policies for the following types of trailers:

  • Boat trailers
  • Cargo trailers
  • Utility trailers
  • Horse and livestock trailers
  • Flatbeds
  • Heavy equipment trailers
  • And more

Why Is Trailer Insurance Important?

Although some motorists mistakenly believe their auto insurance will cover any incident involving their trailer, most standard car or truck insurance policies do not. You don't want to find out you have this significant gap in coverage after the fact. If you use a trailer to haul valuable horses, livestock or equipment, you want a policy that can help protect these assets as well as your personal finances.

What Does Trailer Insurance Cover?

Much like a vehicle insurance policy, trailer insurance can offer liability, collision and comprehensive coverage.

People can often overlook liability coverage for trailers because they tow the trailers behind their vehicles rather than drive them. However, trailers can and do become unhitched and your traditional vehicle insurance policy likely will not cover that type of incident.

Comprehensive coverage also does not extend from your vehicle to your trailer. It's important to secure a separate policy for your trailer in the event of severe weather, theft, vandalism or fire so you can recover the loss of a damaged or destroyed trailer.

What Are Trailer Insurance Quotes Like?

Trailers vary greatly in size and value, and therefore it's impossible to calculate average quotes. Someone needing trailer insurance for a small utility trailer will find greatly different quotes from someone who needs to insure a large $100,000 gooseneck trailer. The quotes you get from North Dakota insurance providers will depend on the following factors:

  • The length and width of your trailer
  • The value of your trailer
  • How often you use it
  • What you use it for

If you have a small car trailer that you use only a few times a year, you should be able to find coverage for as little as $100 a year. For large, high value trailers used on a regular basis, your coverage will cost more.
