Why Is ATV Insurance Important?

ATVs aren't the safest vehicles ever to hit the market. The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma alone has treated more than 30 children younger than 15 for ATV-related injuries since August 2011. Many injuries were for scrapes or twisted ankles, but more severe injuries include spine and neck injuries, skull fractures and internal organ damage. Oklahoma law forbids children to operate an ATV.

Adults can suffer injuries as well. When an accident strikes, you want the protection of an ATV insurance policy to pay for the cost of a doctor's visit or to return your vehicle back to its former glory.

Finding Insurance for Your Particular ATV

Most OK insurance companies offer ATV policies that cover the wide range of vehicles currently available for purchase. They include, but are not limited to these:

  • Three-wheelers
  • Four-wheelers
  • UTVs
  • Side-by-sides
  • Six-wheeled ATVs

Whichever ATV you have found to fit your lifestyle, insurance representatives can find the perfect insurance policy that meets your needs.

Does Oklahoma Require ATV Insurance?

Although Oklahoma's House of Representatives discussed the idea of permitting ATVs on streets and highways as recently as 2008, they still have not settled the matter. ATV insurance is not required for riders and off-roaders, but you do need to register your vehicle with the state.

While it's not mandated, ATV insurance is a good idea. You don't want a single collision to make you park your ride indefinitely. A single injury could set you significantly back financially in the event someone sues you for medical bills resulting from an injury.

What Does ATV Insurance Cover?

ATV insurance protects your personal finances in the event of loss, damage, accident, injury or theft of your vehicle. Most Oklahoma insurance companies offer basic to more comprehensive coverage for ATVs.

  • Liability: This coverage will pay the costs of bodily injury and property damage up to a determined amount if you cause an accident. It will also cover the cost of your court fees if you are involved in litigation stemming from an injury your ATV caused to another person.
  • Collision: This coverage will pay for repairs in the event an accident results in damage to your ATV.
  • Comprehensive: This coverage will provide protection if your ATV is stolen, damaged by fire or severe weather or if it is vandalized.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: This coverage will help cover your costs if another rider causes an accident and does not have the insurance to pay for your expenses.

How Much Is an Average ATV Insurance Quote?

ATVs and their riders are unique, so it is nearly impossible to estimate what your particular quote for coverage will be. Insurers use many factors to determine premiums. Insurance companies operating in Oklahoma usually look at the following to determine your quotes:

  • Your driving record
  • Top speed of the ATV
  • How often it is used
  • Your credit history
  • The ages of the drivers placed on the policy
  • Your age
  • Your gender
  • Your credit score

For further explanation, a 50-year-old female with a clean driving record who occasionally uses her ATV around the ranch will likely pay far less for her insurance premium than a 19-year-old male with several traffic tickets who cruises Oklahoma ditches and trails at top speed and has a bad credit score.
