Oklahoma has a very active and lively motorcycle culture, and many Oklahomans think the ultimate rush is hitting the open road on a motorcycle. The state holds motorcycle meets, races, and benefit rides all year long. When you take to the road, the law requires you to have motorcycle insurance. Before you go out to get quotes and coverage on your bike, read the information below for important information.

Motorcycle Facts and Risks

  • There were 1,540 motorcycle accidents.
  • The most dangerous day/time to ride is Sunday from 4 to 8 pm.
  • Oklahoma County had the highest number of motorcycle accidents in 2011, with 365.
  • Unsafe speed during a turn was the number one cause of motorcyclist-at-fault accidents in 2011.
  • Males aged 46 to 55 and females aged 36 to 45 are the greatest at risk for a motorcycle accident.

Motorcycles may be fun, but they do come with added risk. You could be in an accident due to driver fault, road conditions or driving above the speed limit. And when an accident happens, having proper motorcycle insurance is important.

How Much Motorcycle Insurance Do You Need?

Liability insurance is required in OK, at these levels:

  • $10,000 for injury or death of one person
  • $20,000 for injury or death of two or more persons
  • $10,000 for property damage

It may be a good idea to carry coverage higher than these minimums. Unfortunately, these limits hardly cover a minor accident, let alone a serious accident or fatality. When you do have an accident, if you reach the coverage limits on your policy, you may be responsible for paying the remaining costs out of pocket, which means you may have to sell your house, vehicles, have wages garnished, etc., until you pay the balance.

What Type of Coverage Options Are There?

Motorcycle insurance is very similar to auto insurance, with many coverage options to choose from:

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability: Covers you if you are at fault for an accident.
  • Collision coverage: Covers you in case you collide with an object that is not an animal.
  • Comprehensive: This coverage covers your motorcycle for damage incurred due to anything other than an accident.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorists: If you're involved in an accident with someone who is underinsured/uninsured, this coverage will help you get the repairs you need.
  • Accessory coverage: If you own high value accessories, you can cover them as well.

How Much Is Motorcycle Insurance in Oklahoma?

There is no strict cost for motorcycle insurance policies in Oklahoma. However, when you get quotes, remember that insurers consider the following factors in determining your premium:

  • Age
  • Driving record
  • Location
  • Make/Model of motorcycle and its value
  • Any modifications, including security systems
  • Where the motorcycle is stored
  • Your credit score

There are discounts available, as well. If you have more than one motorcycle, have experience riding, or have taken a riders safety course, you may get discounts. Some insurance companies also offer a "lay-up" policy if you do not use your motorcycle during extended periods.

What Types of Motorcycles Can You Insure?

You can insure almost any type of motorcycle, including the following:

  • Speed bikes
  • Dirt bikes
  • Sport bikes
  • Tricycles
  • Choppers
  • Low boys
  • Harleys

Even if you have a completely custom-built motorcycle, there is a policy and coverage perfect for your situation. While having simple liability coverage may be tempting, having only liability will really hurt when you wreck your $40,000 motorcycle. It's important to be properly covered.
