Why Oklahomans Love Being Outdoors

  • Oklahoma has more shoreline than the combined east and west coasts of the US due to its lakes and waterways.
  • The state of Oklahoma boasts over 300 days of sunshine every year.
  • There are over 48 state campgrounds in Oklahoma and many more private campgrounds.

With so many reasons to enjoy the outdoors in Oklahoma, it's no surprise that the state is one of the top places for outdoor activities. Unfortunately, it also lies in "Tornado Alley" and is victim to tornadoes every year. OK also battles wildfires continuously due to its dry, humid climate, so outdoor adventurists are encouraged to be extra mindful and keep an eye on the weather when outdoors.

What Is RV Insurance?

RV or motorhome insurance is very similar to auto insurance, offering liability coverage and comprehensive coverage. There are also policy add-ons that you can get to fully protect your RV and its contents:

  • Total loss replacement coverage: If fire, theft or severe weather destroys your RV, this coverage helps you get a replacement RV. There are two types of reimbursement, "actual value" and "replacement cost" reimbursement. Actual value takes depreciation into account, whereas replacement cost gives you the funds to purchase an RV comparable to the one you lost.
  • Campsite and vacation coverage: If fire or tornadoes ruin the vacation spot that you have already reserved, this coverage reimburses you for your lost funds.
  • Emergency/breakdown/towing expenses: If your RV breaks down and needs a tow, this will help cover the cost.
  • Full-timer coverage: If you happen to call your RV home, this coverage is right for you. Since your assets and belongings are in the vehicle, this coverage helps cover all of your possessions.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage: Unfortunately, accidents happen. And with this insurance coverage, if the other driver is underinsured or uninsured, you'll still be able to get the repairs you need.

What Types of RVs to Cover

Whether your RV is big or small, there's coverage perfect for you. Below are the major types of RVs, all of which you can cover with RV insurance in Oklahoma.

  • Class A motorhomes: Also known as diesel pushers, these vehicles can be up to 75 feet in length.
  • Class B motorhomes: These vehicles are the smallest type of motorhomes. They include cargo-van types.
  • Class C motorhomes: These motorhomes use the cargo van area as the driving area and typically include a cab-over layout.
  • Motorhome bus conversion: A bus conversion is just that – a conversion from a bus into a motorhome. Since these motorhomes are usually custom made, you may need to have an inspection done before registering the vehicle.
  • Travel trailers: You tow a travel trailer behind your vehicle using a rear hitch hook-up.
  • Fifth wheels: These trailers attach to the host vehicle via a hitch in the bed of a truck, also called a "gooseneck" hook-up.
  • Truck campers: These campers usually slide on the bed of a truck. They have a limited living area.

What's an Average RV Insurance Quote?

RV insurance is required in every state, and the minimums vary. However, there are a few factors to consider when calculating your RV insurance rate:

  • Make/model, class, and length of RV
  • Age of RV
  • Where/how it's stored
  • How often it's used
  • Where it's driven and if it crosses state lines
  • How much the contents are worth
  • Driving record of operator
  • Whether the RV is used as a primary residence
  • Whether the RV will be used by others
  • Custom features/security
  • Preferred coverage amounts/deductibles

Along with your credit score, all of these items will be taken into account by insurers when they issue your motorhome insurance quote. As an example, a Class A RV may cost around $2,000 per year or more to insure, while a Class B may cost between $1,000 and $2,000 per year. These are just examples, however, and your situation may get you a lower or higher rate.
