With approximately 44,000 residents, York is Pennsylvania’s 11th largest city. As part of the much larger Greater York metropolitan area, York, PA sees a fair share of traffic accidents, particularly on U.S. Route 30 and Interstate 83. Of course, vehicular accidents are not limited to major roadways; they can happen anywhere. So before you take to the roads, be sure that the vehicle you are driving is covered by a suitable York car insurance policy.

Finding quality coverage at an affordable price is easy when you work with a local independent agent in the Trusted Choice® network. These agents can provide you with an assortment of competitively priced York car insurance quotes from a variety of competing insurers. They can also explain your different coverage options and answer your insurance-related questions so that you can make informed decisions about your auto coverage. Find a Trusted Choice agent in or near York to learn more.

  • National average cost per year: $1,311
  • Pennsylvania average cost per year: $1,304
  • 23rd most expensive auto premium in U.S.

Auto insurance rates in Pennsylvania are on par with the national average. Of course, the rates listed above can only give you a general idea of what your costs might be. Actual rates vary significantly from one person to the next. For example, a 19-year-old man driving a brand new sports car most likely pays a lot more for his coverage than a 45-year-old woman driving a used minivan. When they are calculating the cost of your York car insurance premiums, insurance companies will consider several things:

  • The make, model, year and safety features of the vehicle(s) you wish to insure
  • Your ZIP code and your vehicle's parking location, i.e., the street, a driveway or a garage
  • The age, sex and marital status of all licensed drivers in your household
  • Your driving record and claims history
  • The amount of coverage you wish to purchase
  • The amount of your deductible

Use our independent agent matching system to find the best insurance plan in your area. You tell us what you’re looking for, and our technology will recommend the best agents for you. Any information you provide will be sent to only the agents you pick. We do not sell to third parties.

Pennsylvania Car Insurance Requirements

  • Bodily injury liability: required
  • Property damage liability: required
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): required
  • Uninsured motorist coverage: not required
  • Minimum liability limits: 15/30/5: Coverage up to $30,000 for all persons injured in an accident, subject to a limit of $15,000 for one individual, and $5,000 coverage for property damage

The state of Pennsylvania requires vehicle owners to carry auto insurance coverage that meets or exceeds these state-mandated minimums. These minimum amounts are meant to provide you with suitable financial protection if you are responsible for a motor vehicle collision. However, accidents that involve significant injuries requiring extensive or long-term medical care can easily exceed these minimums, and you would then be responsible for making up the difference. You may therefore want to purchase higher liability limits in order to better protect your finances.

Number of Uninsured Motorists in Pennsylvania

  • Number of uninsured U.S. drivers: 12.6%
  • Number of uninsured Pennsylvania drivers: 6.50%

Driving without insurance in Pennsylvania has consequences. If you are caught, you can face a fine of no less than $300, possibly have your vehicle impounded and have your driver's license suspended for three months. Pennsylvania does allow you the option of paying an additional $500 fine in lieu of having your license suspended.

Despite these penalties, there are still uninsured drivers on the roadways. If one of them is responsible for a collision that causes you property damage or injuries, you may find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to collect reimbursement for your losses. Unless, that is, your York auto insurance policy includes the optional uninsured motorist coverage. In this case, your insurance company provides the necessary compensation and then attempts to collect funds from the offending driver on its own behalf.

Number of Auto Thefts in Pennsylvania

  • National number of thefts per 1,000 vehicles: 2.94
  • Pennsylvania number of thefts per 1,000 vehicles: 1.50

The rate of car theft in the state of Pennsylvania is lower than the national average, and the rate in York falls somewhere in the middle. In 2013, there were 90 auto thefts reported in this city. That equates to about 2.05 car thefts per 1,000 vehicles, which is still significantly lower than the national average.

If your car is stolen or vandalized, your insurance company will only compensate you if your policy includes comprehensive insurance. This optional coverage, which is sometimes referred to as “other than collision” insurance, covers damage caused by such things as theft, vandalism, flying debris, falling objects, floods and fires, provided they are not collision-related. If you are still paying for your vehicle, you likely have comprehensive insurance already because most lenders require you to carry it until your loan is paid in full.
