What Are My Coverage Options?

If you work for a company that offers Rhode Island health insurance, you can opt to participate in the group plan. This is normally a pretty easy process, but you still have to make certain choices. Those who are self-employed or don’t have a group option may have to do more research to locate a plan that fits your needs. Unfortunately, the uninsured rate has increased in Rhode Island, and now sits at 11.8 percent. Don’t let the complex details of Rhode Island health insurance keep you from securing a policy. Here are the basic plans that you will find in your search:

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): This is available from group and individual providers. Practitioners work within a network to provide healthcare. You choose a primary care physician, who must refer you to other doctors. Services rendered outside of the network are not covered. If you stay within the network, you receive set premiums as a tradeoff.
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): Similar to an HMO, you have a network of providers, but this plan offers more flexibility. You don’t have to go through a primary care physician for a referral, and you can visit any doctor. Those who operate within the network are most affordable.
  • HSA (Health Savings Account):Ideal for young individuals and healthy retirees, this is also known as catastrophic insurance. To apply for an HSA account, which is a medical expenses account, you must have a high deductible health plan. You’re responsible for at least the first $1,500 of your doctor bills, but certain prescriptions and preventive care may be covered in full.
  • POS (Point of Service) – With this policy, you can visit any doctor you want for a procedure, but you must provide the insurance company with proof of expenses to receive redemption benefits. The initial cost of the visit comes out of pocket.
