Vermont Is a Winter Wonderland for Snowmobiles

Since 1967, Vermont has opened its doors to winter’s wonders with a remarkable trail system that now totals more than 5,000 miles. With today’s modern, comfortable sleds, it’s easier than ever to experience the thrill of zipping along winding trails, take 200-mile day trips or multiday tours, or take ride-ins full of country flavor and the majestic mountains.

The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, together with local clubs and organizations, maintains Vermont’s trail network with more than 120 groomers to assure smooth riding. When you hit the trail, you’ll find that VAST’s 129 community-based clubs hold friendly events every weekend all winter long, from pancake breakfasts and chicken barbecues to spaghetti dinners, charity rides, radar runs and snocross races.

There's no end to the fun snowmobilers can experience on Vermont's trails. But with so many enthusiasts participating in this vast expanse of snow-filled pastime, accidents can and do happen. When they do, it's important to have proper insurance protection.

Snowmobile Insurance on Statewide Trails System

According to Vermont laws, all those operating a snowmobile on the statewide trails system must have a liability insurance policy or bond in the amounts of at least $25,000 and $10,000 for damage to property in any one accident.

Snowmobilers must adhere to the following laws:

  • All snowmobiles not legally registered in another state or province must have Vermont registration.
  • A 6-hour safety course must be completed and passed by anyone born after July 1, 1983. Youth 12 years of age or older must have taken a certified safety course and carry that certification with them to present to a law enforcement officer upon demand.
  • All riders must adhere to speed limits posted on trails. The speed limit on frozen lakes, considered highways, is 50 mph.

Why Is Snowmobile Insurance Important?

Thousands of snowmobiling accidents occur in the United States every year resulting in hundreds of injuries and deaths. The main causes of these accidents are natural obstacles, excessive speed and alcohol intoxication. In states like Vermont, where snowmobiling is a popular form of winter recreation, there are many laws and regulations governing the use of these off-road vehicles.

There are more sled riders in this state than the population of most of its cities and towns. That can make for congested trails and ditches, increasing the risk of accident or injury.

A comprehensive snowmobile policy can protect you from having to pay high prices to repair or replace your sled. It can also save you from having to pay court and legal fees should you be sued for anything you did while operating your snowmobile.

What Does Snowmobile Insurance Cover?

You will have a variety of coverage options from which to choose the perfect policy for yourself. Most VT insurance companies offer the following snowmobile insurance protections:

  • Collision coverage: Takes effect when you crash your sled into another snowmobile, tree or other structure
  • Comprehensive coverage: Helps pay for damage caused by severe weather events, vandalism and theft
  • Bodily injury liability: Helps pay for the medical treatment of others should you injure them in a collision
  • Property damage liability: Helps pay for damage you may cause to another person's property while operating your sled

Some VT insurance companies will offer you additional coverage options, including these:

  • Uninsured and underinsured driver coverage: For bodily injury and property damage, in the event that another person causes harm to you or your snowmobile and does not have insurance to pay for damage.
  • Accessory coverage: For such things as helmets, windshields, custom seats, riding gear and eyewear. If you have invested much into the bells and whistles on your sled, this option is a good idea.
  • Year-round coverage: Covers damage or theft of your snowmobile in the offseason.

What Does Snowmobile Insurance Cost?

The insurance quotes for your sled vary depending on the coverage you want to buy and the type of machine you drive. Your quotes can be as little as $80 to $100 per year if you opt to only carry liability. More comprehensive packages average between $300 and $400 per year.

Most Vermont insurance companies consider a number of factors when they give you snowmobile insurance quotes:

  • The make and model of your snowmobile
  • Where you will ride your sled
  • Your age and the age of any other covered riders
  • How you intend on using your sled
  • The deductible you choose
  • The type of coverage you buy
  • Your credit score

Some Vermont insurance companies will offer you discounts if you do the following:

  • You take a snowmobile safety course
  • You remain claims-free
  • You have a clean driving record
  • You bundle your snowmobile insurance with another policy, such as vehicle or homeowners insurance
