The state of Wisconsin has numerous trails and parks where ATV enthusiasts can ride, so it is little surprise that as of 2012, there were more than 293,146 ATVs registered in the state of Wisconsin. Many WI residents use their UTVs and ATVs for farming, ranching, and other work, as well as play. Unfortunately, accidents and injuries involving ATVs are not uncommon, so it is important to have a Wisconsin ATV insurance policy in place.

Use our independent agent matching system to find the best insurance plan in your area. You tell us what you’re looking for, and our technology will recommend the best agents for you. Any information you provide will be sent to only the agents you pick. We do not sell to third parties.

ATV Accident Statistics

  • In 2010, more than 100,000 Americans sustained serious injuries in ATV accidents.
  • Approximately 28,000 of those seriously injured were under the age of 17.
  • Between 1982 and 2011, a total of 289 Wisconsin residents lost their lives in ATV accidents.

Though some states have laws that require residents to carry liability insurance for their all-terrain vehicles, Wisconsin does not. However, this coverage can protect you from financial loss, in the event of a collision, ATV theft, or accident-related lawsuit.

Whether you use your ATV for recreation, hunting, or agricultural purposes, having an ATV insurance policy is an important step toward protecting your investment, your home, and your savings from the cost of medical fees, repairs, and litigation.

Many people think that their homeowners insurance will provide them with coverage for recreational vehicles, such as side-by-sides and four-wheelers. However, the coverage these policies offer may be limited, and is usually only applicable if the accident, theft, or damage occurs while on your own property. For complete coverage, you will need a Wisconsin ATV insurance policy.

What Does an ATV Insurance Policy Cover?

Wisconsin ATV insurance is designed to provide coverage to owners of all sorts of ATVs, including 3-wheelers, quads, and UTVs. It will provide you with liability insurance, which will cover property damage and medical expenses incurred by third parties, if you are responsible for an accident. This liability insurance will also provide compensation for legal fees and court costs associated with covered events, up to the limits of your policy.

You may also go beyond liability coverage by purchasing a comprehensive ATV policy. Comprehensive insurance will cover medical expenses for injuries sustained by your or your passengers, and damages to your ATV. Your policy will provide compensation if your ATV is damaged due to theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects or weather.

In addition, you may elect to purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, so that you will be covered if an uninsured ATV operator is at fault for a collision, in which you suffer injuries or property damage. Because Wisconsin does not require ATV insurance, this added coverage is strongly recommended.

Safety Tips for Wisconsin ATV Operators

  • Dress appropriately, including a helmet, eye protection, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and over-the-ankle boots.
  • Avoid riding on paved roads, as your ATV is not designed to handle well on these surfaces.
  • Never operate your vehicle while under the influence drugs or alcohol.
  • Never allow more passengers than your ATV is designed to carry.
  • Avoid operating ATVs that are not appropriate for your size.
  • Successfully complete an online or hands-on ATV rider safety course.
