Ohio Motorcycle Facts

  • On a per-mile-traveled basis, you are about 30 times more likely to suffer a fatality on a motorcycle than in an automobile
  • If every motorcycle driver wore a helmet about 37% of all motorcycle related deaths could be prevented
  • The most dangerous time to ride is on a summer weekend after 6:00 PM

Ohio Motorcycle Requirements

Ohio requires that all motorcycle operators carry liability insurance in the minimum amount of $12,500 per person and $25,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $7,500 for property damage. Most operators will choose to carry much higher limits on their Ohio motorcycle insurance for more adequate protection.

In addition to the insurance requirement, Ohio also requires all operators who are under the age of 18 or who have been licensed less than a year to wear a helmet. If the driver is required to wear a helmet, then any passenger must also wear a helmet.

What Does Ohio Motorcycle Insurance Cover?

Most companies will provide the following coverages in an Ohio motorcycle insurance policy:

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability: The limits you carry are your choice, outside of state minimums, but most operators will opt for coverage much higher than the minimum. This covers your legal liability to other parties, including a passenger.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage: This is automatic coverage in Ohio and protects you against being struck by someone who is uninsured or who does not carry adequate limits. The limits are the same as the liability limits you carry. You can reject this coverage if you wish.
  • Medical payments: Under Ohio law this is a $5,000 limit that covers the medical bills of pedestrians struck by your motorcycle. The coverage does not apply to you or to a passenger.
  • Physical damage coverage: This protects you for damage to your motorcycle from collision and other causes such as theft or vandalism. It will normally be subject to a deductible.
  • Optional coverages: Many companies will also offer optional coverages such as damage to your helmet, towing and roadside assistance, special equipment and trip interruption coverage.

How to Compare Ohio Motorcycle Insurance Quotes

You can get an Ohio motorcycle insurance quote in one of three ways:

  • You can go on line and shop on your own. The problem here is that you may have trouble comparing many alternative quotes, and you may miss out on important options.
  • You can contact a captive agent. The problem here is that a captive agent represents only one company, and you will not be able to examine more than one quote.
  • You can contact an independent agent who represents multiple companies and who can give you professional advice on the alternatives available.

What About Titling and Registration?

Ohio law requires that all motorcycles be registered and titled. You can do this at a deputy registrar's office. You must bring the original of your title and proof of identity. There will be a fee which varies depending on where you live.

You can renew your registration by mail or on line but when first registering you must do it in person. If any of the information on the registration has changed you must renew in person.

What Can I Do to Improve My Safety?

Whatever you are riding, a dirt bike, a sport bike or a chopper, there are several things you can do to decrease your chances of injury while on your motorcycle:

  • Wear a helmet at all times, even if the law does not require it.
  • Take a motorcycle safety course. You will be a better driver and a safer driver. Most companies will give you a credit on your premium for successful completion.
  • Never let an inexperienced person operate your motorcycle.
  • Remember that the primary reason for collisions between motorcycles and automobiles is because the operator of the automobile never saw the motorcycle. Always assume the auto will do the wrong thing. Keep your headlight on 24/7.
