  • Operators must have and use an emergency engine shut-off device that is firmly attached to their wrist or clothing
  • No PWC may be used between sunset and sunrise
  • PWC operators should maintain a distance of at least 100 feet from other watercraft except when idling

  • Children under 16 years old must have completed a DNR-approved boating safety course and must be under the direct supervision of a sober adult in order to operate a PWC.

Is Georgia PWC Insurance Mandatory?

Georgia has several laws governing the use of PWCs, but there are no laws requiring owners to carry liability insurance. Georgia PWC insurance may not be required, but it is the best way to protect your finances against property damages, liability, or injury.

Types of Personal Watercraft

You might be familiar with popular PWC brand names, including Jet Ski, Sea-Doo and WaveRunner. These popular brands make up some of the many different PWCs used by residents in this state. Popular models include:

Stand-up PWCs: The first PWCs on the market, these were designed to allow an operator to stand on the craft. These can be the most challenging to operate, and there is an increased risk of tipping over.

Sit-down PWCs: An operator sits down on this type of PWC, and many models allow for a passenger on the back. They are less likely to tip over than a stand-up model.

Multi-person PWCs: These are designed to accommodate three or four people at a time, and are designed to be very stable, even with a full passenger load.

Submersible PWCs: These models can actually dive under the water.

What Are the Hazards faced by PWC Owners?

Of course, there are collision risks when operating any motorboat at high speeds. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources cautions that many accidents occur because operators do not follow the rules about underage operators, alcohol, and maintaining a safe distance from other watercrafts. PWC accidents are relatively common on Lake Lanier and Lake Altoona as they tend to be very crowded during peak boating season.

You face the same risks as any other boat owner when you store your PWC or tow it to and from the water. PWCs and their trailers can be costly investments, but proper insurance coverage can shield you from financial losses if they are damaged.

For example, it may only cover your Jet Ski if it is parked in your driveway, or may only offer some liability coverage, but not enough to protect you after a major accident. PWC insurance can fully protect you from the many possible hazards you face. An agent in the Trusted Choice network can help you review what coverage you already have and can advise you on how you can get better protection without spending too much money.
