Camping and traveling in an RV is a popular pastime for many people in Vermont. In fact, residents of the Green Mountain State spend about $13 million a year just on recreational vehicle sales and services. If you own one of these vehicles, you can benefit from having a solid RV insurance policy.

Independent agents in Vermont can shop around to find you a solid and reliable policy at a competitive price. Talk to an independent insurance agent near you to learn more and to start comparing customized RV insurance quotes.

How Much Does RV Insurance Cost in Vermont?

RV insurance rates can vary from a few hundred to thousands of dollars a year. Your customized RV insurance quotes will be based on several factors such as:

  • The type of RV you are insuring and its length, weight, and value
  • How far you plan to drive your RV a year
  • The amount of time you plan to spend living in the RV a year
  • Your driving record and claims history
  • The value of the personal property you have in your RV
  • Which, if any, coverage options you are including in your policy

You may be able to earn valuable discounts on your coverage by bundling it with other policies like car insurance or homeowners insurance or by having a solid history as a good driver. Be sure to ask about these and other potential RV insurance discounts when you request customized quotes.

Why Compare RV Insurance Quotes in Vermont?

Every insurance company has its own way of calculating how high your RV insurance rates should be. This means that each provider you contact is likely to offer you coverage at a different price.

Comparing customized rates from a few different insurers can potentially save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a few years, because it lets you choose the policy that is offered at the most affordable price. Independent insurance agents make comparison shopping easy.

What Does Vermont RV Insurance Cover?

Your recreational vehicle can serve as a vehicle as well as a home, so insurance companies make it possible to build an RV insurance policy that is tailored to your specific needs.

A basic RV insurance policy can provide you with:

  • Coverage against liabilities if you cause a collision
  • Coverage for your property if someone else causes a collision
  • Coverage for your medical treatment if someone else causes a collision

By adding various coverage options to your policy, you can get coverage that is customized according to the type of recreational vehicle you own and the way that you use it.

Is RV Insurance Required in Vermont?

In Vermont, you are only required to have an RV insurance policy if your RV is a self-propelled vehicle, like a motor home or a camper van. In this case, it will be held to the same minimum coverage requirements as your car or truck.

If your RV is a trailer, like a fifth-wheel or a travel trailer, it can be covered against collisions through a trailer insurance endorsement on the policy of the vehicle that will be used to tow it.

In Vermont, all motorized RVs must be covered by:

  • Liability insurance: This covers the cost of other people’s medical bills and property damage if you are at fault for a collision. Your policy must include, at a minimum:
    • Bodily injury liability insurance per person: $25,000
    • Bodily injury liability insurance per accident: $50,000
    • Property damage liability insurance per accident: $10,000
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance (UIM): This can provide coverage if you are in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. Your policy must include, at a minimum:
    • UIM bodily injury insurance per person: $50,000
    • UIM bodily injury insurance per accident: $100,000
    • UIM property damage liability insurance per accident: $10,000

In addition to the insurance coverage that is required by law, if you are still making payments on your recreational vehicles, your lender will require you to cover it against physical damage by including the following in your RV policy:

  • Collision coverage: This covers the cost to repair or replace your RV if it is damaged or totaled in a collision, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This covers the cost to repair or replace your RV if it is damaged or totaled by a non-collision event such as a hailstorm or theft.

Once your RV is paid in full, collision and comprehensive coverage are optional, but still a good idea, particularly if your RV is very expensive.

What Else Can Vermont RV Insurance Cover?

You can expect most RV insurance companies to offer a selection of coverage options so that you can customize your policy to match your coverage needs and the way you use your RV. Examples of some of the coverage options you may want to consider include:

  • Medical payments: This can help pay for medical expenses incurred by you and your passengers if you are injured in a collision, regardless of fault.
  • Personal liability coverage: This is sometimes called full-timer liability. It is ideal for people who live in their RVs full time or more than six months out of the year. It is designed to provide the same personal liability protection you would normally get through a homeowners or renters insurance policy.
  • Vacation liability coverage: This is sometimes called campground liability coverage. It is designed to provide you with additional liability protection to protect you if you accidentally cause property damage or injuries to others while staying at an RV park.
  • Contents coverage: This is ideal if you have a lot of valuable personal property in your RV. It can pay to repair or replace this property if it is lost or damaged by a covered event like theft, a fire, or a windstorm. You can opt for actual value or replacement cost coverage.
  • Towing and roadside assistance: Most RVs require specialized towing and service if they break down while you are out on the road. This insurance is designed to cover the costs if you have to call for help.

Reviewing coverage and costs for each of your options can help you make an informed decision about which offer a good value to you and your family.
