ATV Use Has Some Risks

  • ATV accidents resulted in more than 107,000 injuries and 327 fatalities nationwide.
  • Of those injured, more than 29,000 were children under the age of 16.
  • Between 2008 and 2011, 18 residents of HI lost their lives in ATV accidents.

Taking to the trails on a UTV or a 3-wheeler can be fun, but it is essential to remember that these powerful machines can reach rather high speeds. Like it or not, accidents sometimes happen, and when they do, injuries that require medical attention are commonplace. By having an ATV insurance policy, you may be able to avoid facing large financial losses as the result of a collision.

HI State Laws Regarding ATV Use

Unlike many states that control ATV use and impose safety and registration laws, Hawaii has no laws or regulations whatsoever pertaining to all-terrain vehicle use. This means that riders of any age can operate these vehicles and no insurance is required to cover liability and other expenses.

While this does provide residents with a great deal of freedom, it also increases the risk of a collision with another, less-experienced ATV operator.

Why Should Hawaii Residents Consider ATV Insurance?

Hawaii has a number of picturesque ATV trails for the adventurous rider. Whether you prefer riding through forests, on the beach, over hilly terrain, or on the slopes of a volcano, you can find a great place to ride. While entertaining, these trails can also be hazardous. Any time you go out on your ATV, you risk a collision with another rider or even with a stationary object like a tree stump or a large rock.

Not only do you risk injury when you are involved in an ATV accident, you also risk damage to your vehicle, which can sometimes be very expensive to repair. Even worse, if you are the responsible party in a collision that causes damage or injuries to a third party, you may face high liability costs, depending on the severity of the accident. When you carry ATV insurance in Hawaii, you can rest assured that your finances are safeguarded.

What Does ATV Insurance Cover?

ATV insurance policies will typically offer consumers the following types of coverage:

  • Liability coverage: This is designed cover the costs accrued by others if they suffer property damage or personal injuries as the result of an ATV collision for which you are at fault.
  • Personal injury protection: Also known as medical payments coverage, this is designed to cover necessary medical treatments if you or your passengers are injured in an ATV accident, regardless of fault. Coverage for passengers may not be covered if your ATV is not built to carry others.
  • Collision coverage: This is designed to cover the costs necessary to repair or replace your ATV if it is damaged or destroyed in a collision, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This is designed to cover the costs necessary to repair or replace your ATV if it is lost or damaged in a non-collision event such as a fire or flood, or as the result of a falling object, vandalism, or theft.
  • Trailer coverage: This is designed to cover the costs associated with repairing or replacing the trailer you use to transport your ATV if it is damaged by a covered event. It may also provide additional liability coverage if your trailer causes injuries to others. This may be necessary unless you specifically carry trailer insurance already.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: This is designed to cover your costs if you suffer property damage or injuries in a collision with an at-fault driver who is uninsured or underinsured. Given that ATV insurance is not mandatory in Hawaii, this is an important coverage option to consider.

Are Quotes for ATV Insurance High in Hawaii?

Carrying ATV insurance is a wise decision, and at rates that average about $20 a month, it is relatively inexpensive as well. When you contact different insurance companies to request ATV policy quotes, your costs will be calculated based on a number of considerations. These may include:

  • The type of vehicle you own, including make and model: Fast and powerful ATVs like 3-wheelers will typically be more expensive to insure than slower, utilitarian types like UTVs.
  • The purchase price and current value of your ATV: If you plan to include comprehensive or collision coverage with your policy, the cost to replace your ATV will affect your quoted policy rates.
  • What you use your ATV for: If you own an ATV strictly for agricultural or utilitarian purposes, you will face different risks than would someone who uses their vehicle mainly for thrill riding. Some insurance providers take this into consideration when determining rates.
  • The coverage options you choose: A fully comprehensive policy will cost more than a basic liability-coverage-only policy.
  • Your chosen coverage limits: As with any type of insurance, the more coverage you purchase, the higher your rate will be.
  • The amount of your deductible: The higher your deductible, the lower your premiums will be. It is not a good idea to opt for a deductible that is higher than you can comfortably afford to pay out following an accident, however.
  • The number of operators you are insuring and their ages: Children and inexperienced drivers are more likely to make errors that result in accidents and this will influence your quoted rates.
  • Whether or not you have taken an ATV safety course: These courses are not mandatory in Hawaii, but because they decrease the likelihood of a collision or injury, many insurance companies will offer discounts to operators who have earned a safety certificate.

You may also qualify for discounts if you carry multiple policies with the same provider, opt for automatic monthly payments, or are making a claims-free renewal.
