Our Encompass Insurance Company Score

2.5 Stars

We award Encompass Insurance a final rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars. With well over a century of experience in the industry, the insurance company’s history is certainly noteworthy and respectable, as are its high ratings through both AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). However, the carrier is not BBB-accredited and has had just under 2,000 customer complaints filed against it in the past three years, which is certainly a cause for concern.

Encompass Insurance was founded in 1897, though the insurance company’s name didn’t change to Encompass until 1999. Today, the carrier has been named one of the U.S.’s largest casualty and personal property insurance brands to be sold exclusively through a network of independent insurance agents.

Encompass is a subsidiary of Allstate Insurance Company, which is widely regarded as one of the top auto insurance companies in the country. The carrier has grown exponentially, now offering coverage through a large network of more than 2,600 independent insurance agents nationwide. Coverage is not available in all states.

Due to the high volume of customer complaints, we're hesitant to recommend looking into Encompass Insurance, even if you're located in an area where coverage is available. Instead, we suggest working together with an independent insurance agent to survey several options for your next trusted carrier.

Encompass Insurance FAQs

Encompass does not provide a specific claims response time frame promise.

Encompass allows customers to get in touch via phone, email, snail mail, or online. The carrier's website does not specify its phone department hours. The insurance company also has a social media presence on Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn, which makes it a bit more accessible to customers.

Encompass breaks down its claims process into a few simple steps:

  1. The customer calls Encompass and is assigned a claim number.
  2. A claims team member follows up with the customer to get more information and answer questions.
  3. A claims adjuster evaluates the damage and prepares an estimate for the customer.
  4. A claims team member provides the customer with the damage estimate and settlement.
  5. The claim is resolved, and the customer receives payment.

Customers can stay updated on their claim’s progress by keeping in touch with their independent insurance agent.

Encompass’s official website is well done. Important information can be located easily for prospective and current customers, and what's provided on the website is detailed and thorough. Details about discounts and the carrier’s official claims process, for example, are prominently displayed on the website, which is a courtesy not provided by all insurance companies.

The one aspect lacking from Encompass’s website is an option for online claims reporting. So, Encompass falls a bit behind other modern carriers in terms of user-friendliness.

While Encompass offers many types of coverages, it’s most well-known for its auto insurance. The insurance company provides the following additional coverage options under its auto policies:

  • New car replacement: If a customer’s car (which is less than four years old) is totaled due to a covered loss, Encompass will replace the vehicle with that model in the current year, or a comparable new car if that model is no longer available. The customer is only responsible for paying their deductible.
  • Accident forgiveness: Following an accident, Encompass offers protection against rising premium rates. An optional upgrade to their Elite auto coverage provides protection for multiple at-fault accidents.
  • Loan/lease gap coverage: Covers the difference between the current value of a vehicle and the remaining amount on its loan/lease.
  • Roadside assistance: Available for customers 24/7 for services such as flat tire repair, dead battery replacements, and more.

Your independent insurance agent can help you find out more about Encompass’s auto insurance policies, as well as the carrier's other products.

Encompass has high ratings by both AM Best and the BBB. However, the carrier is not BBB-accredited and has had nearly 2,000 customer complaints filed against it in recent years. Due to this, we're hesitant to call Encompass a good insurance company at this time.

Encompass' insurance products may be right for customers seeking home, renters, car, or other types of personal insurance. Coverage is not available in all states, so you'll need to check your area's eligibility.
