Navy Mutual Final Score

4 Stars

Navy Mutual was founded in 1879, giving the carrier nearly a century and a half of experience in the insurance industry. The carrier’s original mission was to provide life insurance for naval officers, who were often denied coverage due to their profession. Today, the insurance company has expanded its original vision to offer coverage to customers belonging to every branch of the military.

Currently, Navy Mutual offers term and whole life insurance options, as well as annuities and estate planning services for military members and their families. Navy Mutual is a nonprofit organization and the nation’s first federally recognized veterans service organization. The carrier provides survivor benefits to military members, such as educational services, at no cost.

Navy Mutual has not been rated by AM Best, the leading global credit rating agency monitoring the insurance industry. However, the company does receive an "A+" Fitch Rating. Fitch Ratings is a global leader in credit ratings and research. Navy Mutual has been rated “A+” by this rating agency for 21 years.

We award Navy Mutual a final rating of 4 out of 5 stars. For starters, its longevity in serving service members is impressive. It also has an excellent rating from Fitch and a low number of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

The carrier provides life insurance, annuities, and other benefits for active service members, which is an admirable and necessary niche insurance market. Although there aren’t a ton of customer reviews about the carrier, almost all of the online reviews that we found are very positive.

Customer service options and information about how to file a claim (report a death) are readily available and clearly explained online. With life insurance being the primary product sold by Navy Mutual, traditional "claims filing" doesn't necessarily apply.

Active or retired service members should look into Navy Mutual for life insurance options and annuities. An independent insurance agent can help you search for the right carrier for your needs.

Navy Mutual FAQs

Navy Mutual's public website states that after a report of a death, a representative will contact the policyholder as soon as possible.

Navy Mutual has a dedicated phone line for customer service and all other inquiries. The toll-free phone line contact option is available at restricted hours, Monday-Friday. The insurance company also has a social media presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and RallyPoint, making it more accessible to customers.

Navy Mutual policyholders can file claims online, by phone, or by fax. While the carrier does provide a nice claims FAQ for its customers on its public website, it does not detail a specific claims process. If customers have questions about the claims process or how to file, they can contact the carrier or their agent.

Navy Mutual provides a user-friendly experience for its customers. The company's website is clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate. More details about the company's entire claims process would be helpful.

Your independent insurance agent can help you find out more about Navy Mutual’s term life insurance policies, as well as other products and services available.

Overall, Navy Mutual can certainly be considered a good insurance company.

Navy Mutual has been around for well over a century. While the carrier is not rated by AM Best, it has a very high rating from the BBB, and only three complaints have been filed through the latter organization in recent years. It's also rated "A+" by Fitch Ratings.

There are only a handful of online customer reviews found about the insurance company, but the vast majority are very positive.
