The McAllen Metropolitan is #89 in the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s list of cities ranked by the rate of stolen cars. The city has conducted auto theft prevention campaigns in residential neighborhoods and commercial parking lots. These consist of surveying cars and leaving “report cards” telling the vehicle owner what they could do to make their vehicle more secure. The theft prevention efforts have been rewarded. Vehicle thefts plummeted more than 400% in McAllen from 2001 to 2011.

Besides doing everything you can to secure your vehicle, you can protect yourself by adding comprehensive coverage to your policy. Comprehensive auto insurance can compensate you for damages due to auto theft. This optional coverage is known as "other than collision," and it covers incidents like falling trees, collisions with animals, and storm or fire damage. Like collision coverage, you can choose to insure your car for actual cash value, or replacement cost.
