Delaware ATV Insurance

Find the right atv insurance policy for you.

Nobody needs to tell the citizens of Delaware how much fun off-roading can be. Whether you prefer taking a four-wheeler out for a spin through the trails at Blue Diamond Park in New Castle, or simply riding around your property on a UTV, an ATV insurance policy may be necessary to prevent you from incurring undue financial losses. When you request quotes for ATV insurance, you may find that there are more coverage options than there are ATV parks in this state. This is why it is important to compare a number of policies before making a purchase.

ATV Use Is Not Without Risks

  • In 2010, ATV accidents were responsible for approximately 115,000 serious injuries and 590 fatalities in America.
  • Of those injured, approximately 28,000 were children.
  • Between 2008 and 2011, three Delaware residents lost their lives in ATV accidents.

Tearing up the trails on a quad or a side-by-side can be fun, but it is important to remember that these are powerful machines and accidents sometimes happen.

DE State Laws Regarding All-terrain Vehicle Use

  • All ATVs in Delaware must be registered with the State Department of Natural Resources.
  • ATV registrations must be renewed every three years.
  • Operators and passengers of 3-wheeler ATVs must wear a helmet.
  • Children under the age of 12 may not operate an ATV unless:
    • They are riding on land owned by a parent or legal guardian
    • They are accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • ATV’s may not be used on paved roadways unless:
    • They are being pushed across the road in neutral gear
    • They are being used for a special event
  • ATV use between sunset and sunrise is prohibited unless the vehicle is equipped with a operational and lighted headlight and taillight.
  • ATV insurance is not required by law.

Why Should Delaware Residents Purchase ATV Insurance?

Because Delaware residents are not required by law to carry ATV insurance, you may wonder why you should consider purchasing a policy.

If you lack this coverage, you may find yourself facing financial losses if your ATV is stolen or damaged, or if you are involved in an accident. This is particularly true if you are the party responsible for the accident and it results in serious injuries to another person. Whether you use your ATV for hunting, recreation or agricultural purposes, having ATV insurance is an important and cost-effective way to protect your finances and your investment.

Homeowners may be able to count on their homeowners insurance policies to cover some damages and expenses that an ATV accident may cause, but this coverage is typically quite limited. An ATV policy, on the other hand, can offer you all the coverage you need.

What Do ATV Insurance Policies Cover?

ATV policies will not differ significantly from one company to the next, however, the coverage that is included with a basic policy may. Some coverage options may need to be purchased individually as policy riders with one company whereas they may be automatically included with a basic policy with another. This is something to take into consideration when comparing quotes.

Coverage you can expect to find includes:

  • Liability coverage: This can protect you by covering medical expenses and property damages sustained by a third-party if you are at fault for an accident while operating your ATV. This coverage includes lost wages for the injured party as well as court costs and legal fees for you, should you face a lawsuit.
  • Collision coverage: This will cover repairs to your ATV if it is damaged in a collision for which you are at fault.
  • Medical payments coverage: This will cover medical costs for you and your passengers if injuries are sustained in an ATV collision for which you are at fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This will cover repairs to or replacement of your ATV if it is lost or damaged while not in use. Examples of covered events include floods, fires, falling objects, severe weather, theft and vandalism.
  • Uninsured/underinsured ATV coverage: If the operator of another ATV is at fault for a collision but lacks the necessary insurance or funds to cover your damages or medical costs, this will provide you with sufficient compensation to make up the difference.
  • Trailer coverage: This will cover damages to the trailer you use to transport your ATV to and from the trails in the event that it is damaged while in use.

Are Quotes for ATV Insurance High in Delaware?

On average, ATV insurance quotes are less than one dollar a day for full coverage. In Delaware, where weather conditions may permit you to ride only seven or eight months out of the year, you may be able to purchase partial-year policies or pay less for a full-year policy.

When you call different insurance companies to request ATV insurance quotes, they will calculate a rate based on several factors. These may include:

  • The type of ATV you have: A 3-wheeler will be more expensive to insure than a UTV, for example, because it is less stable and can reach greater speeds.
  • The value of your ATV: This will affect your costs if you are including comprehensive, collision or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage with your policy.
  • How you use your ATV: Someone who uses their ATV for agricultural purposes runs very different risks than someone who uses it for thrill riding.
  • The amount of coverage you purchase: If you have a lot of assets, you have a lot to lose. For this reason, you may want to purchase as much liability coverage as you can comfortably afford or look into an umbrella insurance policy.
  • Your driving record: Your actions behind the wheel of a car can reflect they ways in which you may operate your ATV so having a clean driving record can keep your costs low.
  • Your deductible: The higher your deductible, the lower your premiums will be. However, it is a good idea to make sure that your chosen deductible is an amount you can easily afford.

When requesting ATV insurance quotes, be sure to ask about policy discounts. You may qualify to save a significant amount of money by having multiple policies with the same insurer, opting for electronic billing and payment methods or having a claims-free renewal.
