As a small Massachusetts town, Norwell does not experience heavy traffic, but the roadways still see their fair share of cars. Whether you are merging onto Pilgrim’s Highway on your way to Boston, passing a slow-moving vehicle on Washington Street while out running errands, or driving down Main Street on your way to cheer on the Clippers at Norwell High School, you are at risk for being in a motor vehicle collision every time you drive your car. Fortunately, when you are covered by a suitable Norwell auto insurance policy, you do not need to worry about suffering from large financial losses in the aftermath.

When you request and compare rates from a few competing insurers before making a selection, you can save money on your premiums. Comparison-shopping is easy when you work with a local independent insurance agent. These agents can contact insurance providers on your behalf in order to provide you with an assortment of customized Norwell car insurance quotes. Find an agent near you to get started.

  • National Average Cost per year: $1,311
  • Massachusetts Average Cost per year: $1,460
  • 16th Most Expensive Auto Premium in the U.S.

You may be unhappy to learn that the average car insurance rate in the state of Massachusetts is higher than the national average. However, this does not mean that you cannot find significant savings by comparison-shopping. Though the averages listed above can give you a ballpark idea of how much you might expect to pay, your actual Norwell auto insurance costs will be calculated based on several different factors including, but not limited to:

  • the value, make, model, year and safety record of your car
  • the age, sex, and driving record of all drivers in your household
  • the average number of miles you drive each year
  • the amount of liability coverage you would like to purchase
  • the amount of your deductible

Each insurance company is likely to quote you a different price for your premiums, so when you compare a variety of Norwell car insurance quotes, you can select the policy that comes at the best price.

Massachusetts Car Insurance Requirements

  • Bodily Injury Liability: required
  • Property Damage Liability: required
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): required
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage: required
  • Minimum Liability Limits: 20/40/5; Coverage up to $40,000 for all persons injured in an accident, subject to a limit of $20,000 for one individual, and $5,000 coverage for property damage. You are also required to carry a minimum of $8,000 in personal injury protection (PIP).

Although this is a no-fault state, you can still be sued for damages and injuries if they are extensive. If you have a lot to lose, the state’s minimum coverage requirements may not be enough to fully protect your assets. You may, therefore, want your Norwell car insurance to include much higher liability limits. Your agent can help you review costs for different levels of coverage.

Failure to carry car insurance that meets or exceeds Massachusetts’s minimum requirements can result in fines ranging from $500 to $5,000; the suspension of your driver’s license and vehicle registration, which cost an additional $500 to reinstate; and the possibility of facing up to a year in jail. Because of these harsh penalties, drivers in this state are the least likely in the country to be driving while uninsured.

Number of Uninsured Motorists in Massachusetts

  • How many US drivers are uninsured: 12.6%
  • How many Massachusetts drivers are uninsured: 3.90%

With the harsh penalties imposed by this state for driving without insurance, it is little wonder that so few drivers dare to hit the roads without it. Massachusetts requires drivers to carry uninsured motorists coverage, so you do not need to worry about experiencing large financial losses if you are in a collision with an uninsured driver. In this case, your insurance company would cover your costs. Uninsured motorist coverage can also compensate you for damages that occur in collisions with hit-and-run drivers.

Number of Auto Thefts in Massachusetts

  • National number of thefts per 1,000 vehicles: 2.94
  • Massachusetts number of thefts per 1,000 vehicles: 1.91

Auto theft rates in Massachusetts are lower than the national average, and the risk of car theft is extremely low in Norwell. In recent years, for example, there were no auto thefts reported in this town at all. In the unlikely event that your car is stolen, you cannot receive compensation for your loss unless your Norwell auto insurance policy includes “other than collision,” or comprehensive, insurance. This optional insurance covers more than just theft. It can also compensate you for a number of other non-collision damages such as those caused by falling objects, flying debris, floods, and fire. This coverage is usually required by lenders if you have financed the purchase of your car.
