Car insurance covers flood damage, depending on which type of coverage you purchased. Let's start with the basics: There's collision coverage and there's comprehensive coverage.

  • Collision coverage: Collision covers car accidents.
  • Comprehensive coverage: Comprehensive covers everything that isn't a car accident. If it's something out of your control, it's generally covered by comprehensive coverage.

That being said, comprehensive coverage insures against damage caused by storms, hail, wind, lightning, and - you guessed it - flooding. It's important to note that comprehensive coverage isn't "standard" insurance coverage. This means it's an optional policy that comes at an additional cost. However, it also covers you in the event of:

  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Tree-related damage
  • Glass damage (windshield, windows, etc.)
  • Animal-related accidents

If you're unsure what comprehensive coverage is or you want to explore options, talk to an independent insurance agent.
