How to Compare Home Insurance Companies

The Best Home Insurance Companies of 2021

How to find coverage that works for you.

Beautiful Exterior of New Home at Twilight. Detailed breakdowns of the top-recommended home insurance carriers for this year.

Odds are, you spend a lot of time in your home, and you deserve to feel safe there. Your home needs protection from many common disasters like storms, fire, vandalism, and more. Without the proper coverage, you could end up paying out of your own pocket for costly repairs.

Fortunately having the right homeowners insurance can easily solve this issue. For your convenience, we developed a proprietary scoring system to find the best 20 home insurance companies out there. With the help of an independent insurance agent, you can shop with confidence.

How the Score Works

Our scoring system reflects what you, the consumer, are looking for. Most likely, you're in search of a company that’s easy to get ahold of if you have questions or a claim to file, keeps their coverage promises, and values their customers. That’s why we ranked over 200 companies in each of these areas:

  • Accessibility: Measures how easy each company is to communicate with. Companies with 24/7 claims reporting, a strong social media presence, and extended hours (beyond the boring 9-to-5) scored higher.
  • Strength: Measures if a company trusts its reputation to speak for itself. Companies who work with independent insurance agents, have high financial security ratings, and have spent more than 20 years in business rank higher.
  • Service: Measures how happy the company’s customers are with their coverage and service. We've collected rankings from around the web to create and accurate snapshot of which companies go above and beyond.

We’re not swayed by advertising dollars or under-the-table PR conversations. All the information we considered is publicly available on the internet. Our job was to collect it for you, so you can more easily make informed decisions about your home insurance.

What the Score Means

One of our goals is to recognize the companies going above and beyond, not just the ones failing to meet the mark. A total of 5 points (i.e., stars) are possible in each area, for a total of 15 points.

Here’s what each rating means in each area:

  • 1 star: Average
  • 2 stars: Above Average
  • 3 stars: Excellent
  • 4 stars: Superior
  • 5 stars: Perfect! This company earns the Trusted Choice Seal of Approval.

1. Travelers

Travelers was the only company in our rankings to earn a perfect 5-5-5 score in the car, home, and business insurance categories, easily granting them the top spot. Travelers has one of the best websites in the biz, a spectacular reputation for customer service, and rock-solid financial strength.

Travelers even has an A++ rating (i.e., the highest possible) from AM Best, the insurance industry’s leading credit rating agency. Better yet, they sell their products exclusively through independent insurance agents. This strategy proves that Travelers trusts their products to stand above the competition, without the need for extra help from proprietary sales reps.

Travelers was founded in 1853, making them one of the oldest companies on this list. They’re also one of the largest, offering insurance in five countries with more than 30,000 employees dedicated to serving their customers.

2. Acuity

Acuity scored second place thanks to their near-perfect 5-5-4 score. We loved how easy it was to access important information on their official website, and the fact that they offer 24/7 claims reporting. Acuity has an A+ rating from AM Best, which is the second-highest available. Their products are exclusively available through independent insurance agents.

Another thing we love about Acuity is their easy-to-understand discount programs. For home insurance shoppers, they offer a generous discount through their Road and Residence program. If you bundle home and car insurance through Acuity, you can save up to 20% on both coverages. Not too shabby.

3. Erie Insurance

We chose Erie as our second runner-up thanks to their truly spectacular service, access, and stability that they offer customers. Their website was particularly impressive, because in addition to offering online quotes, their services for existing customers were easy to find, including 24/7 claims reporting and online payments.

Erie also has extensive evening and weekend customer service hours, and an exceptional A+ rating from AM Best. That makes them a safe bet for your life insurance.

Erie is a Fortune 500 company offering car, life, business and home insurance through thousands of independent agents nationwide. They’re a great choice if you’re looking to bundle multiple types of coverage, like home and car insurance, at a discount.

4. Grange Insurance

Our third runner up is Grange Insurance. Grange’s 24/7 support makes them a great choice if you have a busy schedule. Grange offers a wide range of personalized coverage options. If mixing and matching coverages like home cyber protection and sewer backup in your home insurance appeals to you, they’ve got you covered.

If you need a little extra guidance, they also have a regularly updated blog about insurance topics and current events. They have a strong A- rating from AM Best.

Grange Insurance offers generous savings to customers in 13 different states. They work exclusively with expert independent insurance agents to provide auto, home, business and life coverage.

5. Nationwide

Nationwide is another practically perfect 5-5-4 runner up. Their superior online services, size, stability, and choice to work with independent insurance agents pushed them close to the top of our rankings.

Nationwide is especially good if you’re looking for discounts, with potential savings clearly spelled out on their site. Like Grange and Erie, their size and range of products lets you mix and match coverage for maximum discounts and benefits for you. They even offer pet insurance. Nationwide is also rated A+ by AM Best.

Nationwide is one of the only insurers on this list that offers a fully bilingual website, making them highly accessible to Spanish-speaking customers. That makes it easier to get covered and file a claim, especially in the aftermath of a disaster that damages or destroys your home.

6. Allstate

Allstate is another insurance giant. We ranked them highly because, despite their enormous size (i.e., 79,000 staff and independent insurance agents), their customer service has stayed personal and user-friendly.

Allstate offers 24/7 customer support by phone and through their online portal, as well as a mobile app for smartphone users. Their website is also fully available in Spanish. Allstate is rated A+ by AM Best.

Allstate offers a massive variety of products to choose from including condo, motorcycle, renters, and home insurance. Their website is full of useful tools, including a home insurance discounts checklist, rate comparison tools, and a step-by-step guide to getting covered. This carrier really makes their customers feel empowered.

7. Central Insurance Companies

Central Insurance Companies is one of our top choices because of their stellar customer service and commitment to working with independent insurance agents. They offer 24/7 claims reporting on top of already-extended customer service hours (i.e., 8 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. every day, including weekends).

They’re also extremely stable, having been around since 1876, with an A rating from AM Best. Their Central Mutual Summit home insurance coverage includes credit card and forgery coverage, refrigerator contents coverage and even coverage for data recovery if your computer gets hit by a virus.

8. NYCM Insurance

We loved NYCM’s 24/7 claim service, online bill pay and other nifty website features. Their commitment to independent insurance agents and A rating from AM Best didn’t hurt, either. That’s why we placed them in our top 10 home insurance companies.

Whether you’re a traditional homeowner, condo owner, or mobile homeowner, you’ll find coverage options with NYCM Insurance. They’ve even got a handy discount checklist on their website.

Employing only about 800 people, NYCM Insurance is a smaller, more regional company than most on this list. Their high-ranking spot shows that they’re punching way above their weight to deliver excellent service and value to their customers.

9. Progressive

One of the most recognizable insurance companies in America, Progressive landed on our Top 10 list because of their top-notch AM Best rating of A+ and their 24/7 customer service. Progressive is known for exceptionally speedy claims service and their willingness to provide insurance to just about everyone.

Progressive works with independent insurance agents to help you get the coverage you need. Today they offer car, home, business, and life insurance along with a variety of niche products. In addition to home insurance, Progressive offers special insurance if you offer short-term rentals of your home through services like AirBnB.

10. American Modern Insurance Group

We chose American Modern Insurance Group to round out our Top 10 because of their streamlined website, convenient evening customer service hours, and excellent A+ rating from AM Best. American Modern Insurance Group is a specialty insurance company that works through a network of independent insurance agents.

They specialize in taking on homes other insurers won’t touch, whether the home is vacant, a rental, in a difficult location, or something else. They’re rated A+ by AM Best.

11. The Hartford

We loved The Hartford’s superior financial strength as well as their 24/7 support and easy-to-navigate website and informational materials. They’ve also got a high A+ rating by AM Best.

The Hartford insures cars, homes, and business and is the only insurance company endorsed by the AARP. If you’re an AARP member, it’s worth checking with The Hartford for special deals and discounts first.

The Hartford was founded in 1810 as a fire insurance company, making them the oldest company on this list. They even insured President Lincoln’s home in Illinois while he moved into the White House in 1861. The Hartford’s long history reflects their stability and excellent reputation.

12. Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual ranks high on our list because of their financial strength and user-friendly tools. They’re the third-largest property and casualty insurance company in the US, a Fortune 68 company with about 50,000 employees worldwide.

Liberty Mutual offers easy online quotes and clearly spells out what each type of policy covers on their life insurance homepage. Liberty Mutual is rated A by AM Best. Liberty Mutual allows customers to add convenient coverages to regular homeowners insurance as well, such as inflation protection.

The features we loved most were 24/7 claims reporting, a claims reporting guide, and online bill pay. They also work with independent insurance agents.

One great option West Bend offers for homeowners is a Home and Highway plan. This rolls your home and car into one package, also covering detached buildings like a garage or shed. They even offer a “go green” coverage option: in the case your home is destroyed, they’ll pay extra to help you rebuild it with eco-friendly materials.

14. Donegal Insurance Group

We picked Donegal Insurance Group for their strength and stability through their long history, having been founded in 1889. Donegal is a regional insurance company that offers many coverages, with special policies available for farmers. The carrier works with independent insurance agents and has an A rating from AM Best.

Donegal Insurance Group offers discounts for homeowners who install safety equipment like burglar alarms in their home. They also offer renewal discounts, meaning the longer you stick with them, the higher your discounts will become.

We selected Hanover Insurance Group (AKA The Hanover) for our Top 20 because of their stability and excellent reputation. Founded in 1852, The Hanover is one of the Top 40 oldest companies on the New York Stock Exchange. They partner with over 2000 independent insurance agents and have an A rating from AM Best.

Their beautiful and easy-to-navigate website, one of our favorites out of over 200 companies we researched,  along with their 24/7 claims center and commitment to working with independent insurance agents, nabbed them one of our top spots. They have an A- rating from AM Best.

Home insurance through Mutual of Enumclaw includes access to a wildfire monitoring program (critical for the Northwest) along with plenty of perks at local theme parks, restaurants, and other attractions. Because they're a mutual organization, policyholders are the real beneficiaries of the company’s success—not stockholders.

18. Ohio Mutual Insurance Group

We loved Ohio Mutual Insurance Group’s strong financial track record and 24/7 online insurance portal, 360access. They’re a mutual organization with over 100 years of history in Ohio. Today they operate in seven states and work exclusively with independent insurance agents. The carrier has an A rating from AM Best.
