What to Know about USAA

USAA was founded in 1922, giving the carrier nearly a century’s worth of experience in the insurance industry. The insurance company was originally created by a group of Army officers who decided to insure each other’s vehicles. Since then, USAA has expanded to servicing millions of customers across the country with a variety of coverage solutions, including homeowners insurance, umbrella insurance, health insurance, and more.

As of 2019, USAA’s net worth surpassed $35 billion. By the end of that same year, the insurance company had 13 million members (i.e., policyholders) and 35,000 employees and had paid out $2.4 billion in returns to its customers. USAA has consistently received high marks from major credit rating agencies, such as an “Aaa,” or exceptional, rating from Moody’s Investors Service and an “AA+,” or very strong, rating from Standard & Poor’s. A.M. Best rates the insurance company as having an exceptional long-term outlook.

USAA’s long-standing history, massive size, and amount of insurance in force has aided the carrier’s reputation as a financially stable insurance company with a strong outlook for the future. A.M. Best, the leading global credit rating agency monitoring the insurance industry, gives USAA an “A++” rating—the highest available—indicating the carrier is a superior choice for insurance customers. A high rating from A.M. Best assures customers that USAA is capable of offering guaranteed, secure coverage from a trustworthy and reputable carrier.

Established in 1899, A.M. Best is one of the oldest rating companies in the world. Reviews from A.M. Best indicate an insurance company’s financial strength and creditworthiness, and are based on comprehensive evaluations of the company’s operating performance, business profile, and balance sheet. For customers who aren’t as familiar with insurance companies’ respective reputations, A.M. Best’s ratings system allows them to make an informed decision about who they can trust to meet their needs in the short term and to remain a strong, financially sound company in the long term.

USAA Customer Reviews

Consumer Affairs
“I love USAA. I have had a great experience still. I joined when purchasing my latest car about  one year ago. I really appreciate their honesty and willingness to help you anyway they can. I am pleased as punch with them.”
Consumer Affairs
“Have had USAA as the insurance coverage for many years. Christmas of 2018 saw a flood from the upstairs loo. Had no idea what to do. Called USAA and had immediate help with the entire process. Not what anyone wants on the holidays, but USAA made a horrible experience turn into one with a happy ending. USAA took care of all of the contractors, subcontractors, appointments, etc. Just paid deductible. It's nice peace of mind to have USAA.”

“I personally love the company, but you would think keeping the same vehicles and moving would not greatly increase my policy.”

“The customer service representatives are knowledgeable, kind, courteous, respectful and work very hard to satisfy your needs or claims. The claim processes, which I’ve had to make use of a couple of times during my time as a USAA customer, has been easy to use, the easiest I’ve ever run across to file a claim with, and are very honest and reasonable when completing your claim. The time between making a claim and getting the vehicle fixed or your property claim resolved is the best and quickest I’ve ever come across. Their company security, involving your accounts, is excellent. Their website, for the most part, is easy to sign into and to negotiate throughout your entire online account. I repeat, this insurance company is, without a doubt, the very best I’ve ever done business with.”
Clearsurance
“I'd been a Esurance customer for many years, and decided to compare companies in an effort to save money. Because of my Veteran status, I was able to get coverage from USAA, and now I save over $30 monthly versus Esurance. I recently was involved in a hit-run accident; no injuries. When I contacted USAA they immediately jumped into action. After describing the incident, they gave me a choice of repair facilities; recommended or I could choose my own. I went with one of their choices. Within an hour, I was contacted by the repair facility; set an appointment; provided pictures and description of damage. USAA also arranged a rental, sending the request directly to Enterprise. This accident occurred on 7-17; dropped the car off on 7-20. A completely stress-free experience.”

TrustedChoice.com's Final Review

We award USAA insurance company a final rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. For starters, the carrier has been around for just under a century now. USAA has received extremely high ratings through multiple organizations, including A.M. Best and the BBB. While coverage availability is limited to military members and their families, the carrier provides a multitude of insurance products for this niche of customers, from homeowners insurance to umbrella insurance and beyond. The carrier has had a high volume of complaints filed against them through the BBB over the past few years, which is a bit concerning and docks them a couple of points in our books. However, despite the somewhat mixed customer feedback, many folks leave glowing reviews and report excellent experiences with the carrier’s customer service and coverage alike. USAA also provides one of the best user-friendly experiences around with an excellent website and simple claims filing process. Overall, we say that if you qualify for coverage and are in need of any of their products, don’t hesitate to look into USAA with your independent insurance agent to be your next trusted insurance company.
