While most new or used car shoppers do extensive research into the various safety features and the latest technology offerings, one thing that many people overlook is the cost to insure their new ride. Car insurance costs can vary dramatically between cars, even in the same category. Considering the cost of insurance before signing on the dotted line can help you more accurately determine if you'll stay within your budget.
Before you purchase a new (or used) car, check with a local independent insurance agent. The cheapest cars to insure overall might not be the cheapest for you personally, depending on factors like your age, marital status, and more, but your agent can help you find the most affordable coverage in your area. First, though, here's a guide to some of the cheapest cars to insure this year.
Why Are Some Cars Cheaper to Insure Than Others?
Insurers rely on statistics and price their policies based on the risk factors that you and your vehicle present. Just as you have driving and claims records, all vehicle types and specific models have claim histories, and those can affect your auto insurance premium.
Vehicles with high theft rates are usually more expensive to insure than cars that are often ignored by thieves. The same can be said for safety features. Cars that are loaded with safety features and receive high safety ratings are typically less expensive to insure because they hold up better in accidents and protect the vehicle's occupants during a crash.
The type of vehicle you purchase will also impact your premium. Cars that are designed for speed, such as sports cars, often cost more to insure, thanks to their bigger engines and appeal to riskier drivers. Vehicles popular with drivers who usually have children in the car (e.g., minivans) are usually easy on the pocketbook when it comes to insurance coverage, as these drivers tend to drive more carefully and get in fewer accidents.
10 Cheapest Cars to Insure in 2025
While the average annual insurance cost in the U.S. is $2,685 for a policy with full coverage or $800 for minimum coverage, drivers' rates can vary based on their age, the kind of car they drive, where they live, their marital status, their driving record, and more.
Here are the 10 cheapest cars to insure among the best-selling models. Keep in mind that rates are also affected by the coverage limits and deductibles you choose, which also account for major variations in what people pay for car insurance. Further, even though these vehicles may be among the most affordable models to insure this year, the actual sticker price may be higher than others.

- Bodily injury liability insurance: $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident
- Property damage liability insurance: $50,000 per accident
- Uninsured motorist bodily injury insurance: $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident
