Wisconsin is the birthplace of snowmobiling. Residents in this state began experimenting with over-snow vehicles in the 1800’s, and it is little wonder given the long winters and how much snow falls in this part of the country each year.

In the snow-belt region near Lake Superior, this state can often see more than 100 inches of snow in year. Hitting the trails on a snowmobile is a fun family activity and is a prevalent winter recreation activity in this northern state. If you own and operate a sled, you may want to strongly consider a Wisconsin snowmobile insurance policy.

    • To cross over a bridge
    • To cross to the other side of the road. You must come to a complete stop before crossing.
  • When traveling alongside a roadway, you must be riding in the same direction as traffic in the nearest lane and you must obey all posted speed limits.
  • You may not operate your snowmobile while intoxicated. Doing so can result in a fine of $572.00 for a first offense and higher for repeated offenses.
  • Snowmobile insurance coverage is not required.

Although insurance is not required by law, if you own a one of these machines, it is a very good idea to purchase a policy. In addition to protecting your investment, you can also protect your finances if you are at fault for an accident while operating your sled.

What Does Wisconsin Snowmobile Insurance Cover?

A basic snowmobile policy provides coverage against bodily injury and property damage liability in the event that you are responsible for a snowmobile accident. Liability coverage is very important as these costs can sometimes be quite high, particularly when serious injuries that require ongoing care are involved.

Many insurance companies will allow you to insure four or five operators for your sled and some will enable you to insure multiple snowmobiles on a single policy. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate policy for every member of your family.

What Other Coverage Options are Available?

In addition to liability coverage, you have the option to purchase several other coverage types. Some policies may include some, or all, of these options as part of their standard policy while others will require you purchase them in addition to the basic coverage. Because snowmobile insurance is relatively inexpensive, it will not cost you a lot to purchase full coverage for your sled. Coverage options include:

  • Collision coverage: This compensates you for damages to your sled if it is damaged in a collision with another rider or with a stationary object such as a tree or a rock.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This compensates you for damages to your sled if it is damaged by any cause other than a collision. This can include fire, flood, falling objects, extreme weather, vandalism and theft.
  • Medical payments coverage: This covers the costs of medical treatment for you or your passengers if you are injured in a collision for which you are at fault.
  • Uninsured/underinsured coverage: This provides compensation if you are injured your snowmobile is damaged by another third party who lacks the coverage or funds to cover you for your losses.
  • Safety apparel coverage: Some insurers will permit you to purchase coverage against loss or damage to any apparel designed to protect you while riding. This includes helmets, gloves and goggles.
  • Trailer coverage: This provides compensation if your trailer or sled is damaged while transporting it to or from the trails.
  • Roadside assistance: This can come in handy if your machine breaks down on a trail or if you have a problem with your battery or if you have lost or misplaced your key and are stranded.
