South Dakota ATV Insurance

Find the right atv insurance policy for you.

Nobody needs to tell the citizens of South Dakota how much fun off-roading on an ATV can be. Whether you prefer riding your 4-wheeler through the winding trails of the Black Hills National Forest, using your side-by-side to tour the hilly grasslands of the Oahe Downstream Recreation area in Fort Pierre, or simply riding around your property on a UTV, an ATV insurance policy may be necessary to prevent you from incurring undue financial losses. There is no reason to pay more than you need to for this coverage, so be sure to request and compare a selection of ATV insurance quotes in South Dakota before making a purchase.

Use our independent agent matching system to find the best insurance plan in your area. You tell us what you’re looking for, and our technology will recommend the best agents for you. Any information you provide will be sent to only the agents you pick. We do not sell to third parties.

ATV Use Does Come with Risks

  • Across America, ATV accidents resulted in approximately 107,500 injuries and 327 fatalities in 2011 alone
  • Of those injured in these accidents, approximately 29,000 were children under 16
  • Between 2008 and 2011, 16 residents of South Dakota lost their lives in ATV accidents

Tearing up the trails on a 3-wheeler or a quad can be fun, but it is important to remember that these are powerful machines and that accidents can sometimes happen. Having sufficient coverage in place can help to prevent large financial losses in the wake of a collision.

Why Do South Dakota Residents Need ATV Insurance?

South Dakota has a number of scenic and adventurous ATV trails throughout its state parks. These parks have very strict guidelines for ATV use, including the requirement for ATV liability insurance. Many private ATV trails require insurance as well. ATV insurance in South Dakota is not very expensive, and carrying it will permit you access to the many great riding areas this state has to offer.

Additionally, this coverage can be advantageous, as it can shield you from overwhelming debts in the event that you cause injuries or property damage to another while operating your ATV. This coverage can also protect the investment you have made in the purchase of your vehicle.

What Is Covered by an ATV Insurance Policy?

When you request information about ATV insurance policies, you can expect to find the following coverage options:

  • Liability coverage: This is designed to cover the costs related to personal injury or property damage that you cause to a third-party as the result of an ATV accident for which you are at fault.
  • Collision coverage: This is designed to cover the cost of repairs to your ATV if it is damaged or destroyed in a collision, regardless of fault.
  • Medical payments coverage: This is designed to cover necessary medical treatments if they are required by you or your passengers as the result of an ATV accident, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive damages coverage: This is designed to cover the costs associated with repairs to or replacement of your ATV if it is lost or damaged in an other-than-collision event. Some typically-covered events include fire, flood, falling objects, severe weather, vandalism and theft.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: If you sustain property damage or injuries in a collision caused by an uninsured or underinsured motorist, this is designed to cover the costs that the responsible party cannot.
  • Trailer coverage: This is designed to cover damages to the trailer you use to transport your ATV to and from the trails.

Are Quotes for ATV Insurance High in South Dakota?

The typical ATV insurance policy costs less than one dollar a day for full coverage. When you call different providers to request ATV insurance quotes, your costs will calculated based on several factors. These may include:

  • The type of ATV you own: A 3-wheeler will cost significantly more to insure than a UTV, for example, because these vehicles tend to be less stable and can reach much greater speeds.
  • The value of your ATV: If your coverage includes comprehensive, collision or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, the cost to replace your vehicle will affect your policy rates.
  • How you use your ATV: If you own an ATV for agricultural purposes or to do yard-work on a large plot of land, your risks are very different than they are for someone who uses their vehicle for recreational purposes only.
  • The amount of coverage you purchase: As with any type of insurance, the more coverage you purchase, the higher the rate will be.
  • Your driving record: Your driving history can reflect the ways in which you are likely to operate your ATV. If you will have children operating the ATV, your rates are likely to increase.
  • Your deductible: As with any type of insurance, the higher your deductible, the lower your premiums will be. It is a good idea to choose deductible that is as high as you feel you can comfortably afford to pay in the event of an accident.

When you are requesting ATV insurance quotes, be sure to ask about potential policy discounts. You may qualify to save money if you have multiple policies with the same insurer, opt for automatic electronic payments or having a claims-free renewal.
