What is an independent insurance agent?

Home insurance provides a backup plan in case a catastrophe strikes in the neighborhood. Whether it's a fire, high winds, or a burglary, it's covered by a suitable homeowners insurance policy in Florida. Home insurance will pay for repairs to the home and replacement of belongings, pay for someone else's injuries on the property when it's the homeowner's fault, and may pay for temporary living expenses if the home is so badly damaged that it's uninhabitable.

The good news is that Illinois drivers pay less than most other drivers around the nation. The average cost for car insurance nationwide is $1,311. In Illinois, it's only $1,079. The best rates can be found by comparing quotes from multiple companies before choosing a policy.

Worker's compensation in Illinois is a no-fault system, meaning covered employees cannot sue their employers. These benefits are paid to workers who experience work-related injuries or illnesses. Illinois law requires employers to provide workman's compensation insurance for almost everyone who is hired, injured, or whose employment is localized in Illinois. There are a few exemptions, including sole proprietors and members of limited liability companies. The Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission estimates that 91% of Illinois employees are covered under the law, and their employers are required to purchase worker's compensation insurance.

Restaurants in Ilinois need three basic types of insurance: property, liability, and employee coverage. Keep in mind that each type of insurance has sub-types of more specialized insurance depending on the type of restaurant and the services offered. Many restaurants have added policies for delivery and buffet services. Food spoilage is also a popular add-on policy for restaurants.

Businesses like moving companies, trucking companies, and those that offer transportation services need commercial vehicle insurance. If a business isn’t in one of those categories, it might be hard to tell what kind of coverage they need. What about home-based businesses where the owner occasionally drives their personal car to client meetings? The standard rule is that if a car is driven for business purposes, a commercial auto policy is needed.

Last year, small businesses in Illinois made $490 billion. If they were faced by claims for liability, property damage, or worker's compensation, how would they handle the associated costs? Without the proper amounts and types of coverages, these claims would have to be paid for out of pocket, meaning they would have to come from the business’s revenue.

It depends.  An older inn near the coast might pay around $5,000/year. But a fancy high-rise hotel just a few miles away might pay as much as $1,000,000/year. To make things even more interesting, if these same two hotels were located just 10 miles further inland, their premiums might drop by half. In another state altogether, further away from the coast, the small one might pay $1,200/year, while the big one might pay $150,000/year.

Umbrella insurance – also called excess liability insurance – is a type of coverage that provides protection if a policyholder causes harm to another person or that person’s property. Depending on the amount of damage or injury, existing liability limits associated with policies for a home, auto, motorcycle, or RV might not be enough to cover a liability claim. An umbrella insurance policy in Illinois protects the policyholder's assets above and beyond the liability limits of their standard insurance policies. If they don’t have umbrella insurance and their financial responsibility is greater than their liability limits, they will have to pay the difference out of pocket.

A renters insurance policy is a simple way to cover a tenant's personal belongings. Even though the property owner's landlord insurance policy will cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding the structure of the apartment or home, if the tenant isn't financially able to replace their belongings, they will want to have renters insurance coverage in place. Although some people may not feel that their belongings have a high value, estimating the cost of replacing them can help get the right coverage in place. What about home computers and other electronics? Furniture is also expensive to replace, even if the tenant chooses second-hand pieces. If there's a total loss, the tenant needs to make sure they can financially handle starting over.

Life insurance is all about preparing for the unexpected. It is important for everyone to think about how their dependents would fare if they were to meet an untimely demise. If they are married, they may want enough coverage so their spouse can afford to keep the family home. If they are a parent, they are likely to want to ensure that their children are well cared for and that they have many of the opportunities they might otherwise need to forgo due to lack of funds.
