Whether you use a small utility trailer to help your college-bound son or daughter move back home from Salt Lake City during the summer, or you have a livestock trailer used to haul animals to the 4-H exhibits in Morgan County, you may want to consider protecting it and the items you tow with an insurance policy. Before you search for trailer insurance quotes, however, there are a few factors to keep in mind.

Use our independent agent matching system to find the best insurance plan in your area. You tell us what you’re looking for, and our technology will recommend the best agents for you. Any information you provide will be sent to only the agents you pick. We do not sell to third parties.

Why is Trailer Insurance Important?

Although Utah does not require trailer insurance for most uses, protecting yourself against the costs of damages and injuries is important. Trailers have a number of risks that can require additional protection, including:

  • Strong winds or a speeding truck passing by you can cause your trailer to sway back and forth on the road, posing a risk to you and other motorists.
  • Trailers can sometimes become unhitched, causing it to move freely and without control.
  • When turn signals and brake lights malfunction on a trailer, it is difficult for other motorists to anticipate your moves.

Does Utah Require Me to Carry Trailer Insurance?

If you use your trailer to transport goods as part of business operations, Utah may require you to carry minimum liability insurance. It's a good idea to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to find out if this applies to your trailer. This is called "commercial trailer insurance" and carries an added layer of protection. Utah does require safety inspections for certain trailers as well. Your DMV will be able to conduct this inspection for a $15 fee. Most trailers also need to be registered with the state, and more taxes and fees will apply to this registration.

Can I Find Insurance for My Particular Trailer?

If you are required to register your trailer, chances are that Utah insurance companies have a policy that meets your needs. The most common types of insurable trailers include:

  • Utility trailers
  • Boat trailers
  • ATV or snowmobile trailers
  • Horse trailers
  • Livestock trailers
  • Flat-beds or tractor-trailers
  • Camper trailers

What Does Trailer Insurance Cover?

While a small utility trailer used only periodically may be insurable under your car or truck's policy, it is recommended to insure larger, more versatile trailers under their own policy. The more valuable your trailer, the less likely your vehicle's insurance policy will be adequate enough to cover you in the case of severe damage. Trailer insurance options include some familiar choices, such as:

  • Liability coverage: Can help pay for damages or injuries your trailer causes another person.
  • Collision coverage: Can help assist you in paying for repairs to your trailer if it is involved in a crash, and the highest coverage options can help replace your trailer if it is a total loss
  • Comprehensive coverage: Can help pay for repairs to your trailer, should it be damaged by severe weather, theft or vandalism.

What Will My Trailer Insurance Quote Look Like?

Quotes for trailer insurance greatly vary, as there is a wide range of trailers on the roads. Most Utah insurance companies take several factors into consideration when they calculate your quote, including:

  • The trailer's size and value
  • The contents you will be transporting
  • Your driving record

You may be able to cover your small utility trailer under your vehicle's insurance policy at no additional cost. Whereas a comprehensive insurance policy for a flatbed trailer may be quoted at around several hundred dollars a year, it's always a good idea to compare several quotes from a variety of insurance companies to be certain the policy you choose offers the best coverage at the lowest price.
