Mississippi is famous for medical breakthroughs. The world's first human lung transplant was completed here in 1963 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In 1964 at the same hospital, Dr. James D. Hardy performed the world's first heart transplant surgery. Whether you need an organ transplant, vaccinations for your children, or an annual physical exam, Jackson, MS health insurance is a must.

To find an affordable policy that offers comprehensive coverage, contact an independent agent in the Trusted Choice® network. Jackson Health Insurance Options

Whether you’re searching for Jackson health insurance coverage on the individual market, or have chosen to elect coverage through your employer, it’s important to understand how the details of individual plans affect your healthcare options. While many residents secure health insurance through an employer, you may be able to find cheaper insurance in the individual market when you work with an independent agent. Member agents in the Trusted Choice network will work with you to assess your personal needs and find a policy that matches those.

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): This policy requires that you choose a primary care physician within your network of healthcare providers. If you need to see another doctor, you must receive a referral from your primary care physician. Services outside the network aren’t covered, but while flexibility is limited, this plan offers affordable doctor visits and a low deductible.
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): This policy also works within a healthcare network, but doesn’t require that you obtain a referral from your primary care physician. You also have the ability to go out of network for medical services, but it may cost you more. If having the ability to choose your doctor is vitally important, this plan may work better for you than an HMO policy.
  • POS (Point of Service): This plan is based on the original model of health insurance, where an individual pays for services out of pocket and is then reimbursed. This plan still comes with certain exclusions and a deductible amount, but doesn’t require you to have a primary care physician.
  • High Deductible Health Plan/Health Savings Account (HDHP/HSA): You must have a HDHP health plan to obtain a HSA, which acts a medical savings account. This is available through individual and group providers. Although high deductible amounts make such options affordable when compared to other types of health insurance coverage, they aren't ideal for those who frequently visit the doctor or who have serious medical conditions. Especially if you have long-term treatments and may require extensive, often expensive care in the future, this is likely not the most affordable plan for you.

The Risks of Being Uninsured

While it may seem more cost-effective to skip health insurance, it can cost much more in the long run. Studies have proven that those without health insurance are more reluctant to visit a doctor when symptoms first appear, and putting off a doctor visit just speeds up the deterioration of your health over time. If you wait until your symptoms are unbearable, it can end up costing you far more than any health insurance premium.

Additionally, if you have a lapse in coverage for an extended period of time and then try to obtain health insurance, it will be more expensive. You’re placed in a higher-risk pool based on the idea that if you haven’t had coverage, you’ve likely neglected regular healthcare that will most likely lead to expensive medical needs. Even if you can only afford to maintain the bare minimum amount of health insurance, it’s better than the alternative of being uninsured.
