Family camping at RV park in Utah. Find Utah RV Insurance.

More than 10.5 million people visit Utah's national parks every year, and many of those visitors travel via recreational vehicles, also known as RVs. Whether you're a full-timer or head out a few times over the summer, you need a comprehensive RV insurance policy to protect your vehicle and the assets inside.

A local independent insurance agent can help you find the best RV insurance plan in your area. They'll work with you to learn about your vehicle and the type of traveling you do to find you the best RV insurance quotes in Utah.

Is RV Insurance Required in Utah?

Some RVs are driven and others are towed behind a vehicle. If you own an RV that is driven, Utah law requires that you obtain the same coverage as other motor vehicles in the state. This includes bodily injury liability, property damage liability, and personal injury liability.

Under these policies, you'll be required to carry the minimum amount of coverage for each:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person
  • $65,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people in one accident
  • $15,000 in property damage coverage for one accident

It is always a good idea to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to find out which laws and requirements apply to your particular RV.

It's also important to remember that the minimum requirements may not be adequate coverage to protect you from accidents or injuries caused by the operation of your RV.

How Much Does RV Insurance Cost in Utah?

The cost of RV insurance will depend largely on the type of RV that you own. There are three main classes of RVs, type A, type B, and type C.

  • Type A motor homes are the largest recreational vehicles. These are often considered a home on wheels.
  • Type C motor homes are medium-sized models that are often referred to as mini-motorhomes.
  • Type B motor homes are the smallest types of recreational vehicles, also referred to as campers.

While RV insurance can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, it is typically more expensive than traditional auto insurance. Your customized RV insurance quote will depend on multiple factors including:

  • Where you live
  • How you plan on using your RV
  • The features of your RV
  • How often you'll travel
  • Your experience driving an RV
  • The type and amount of coverage you purchase
  • Your claim history
  • Whether you use your RV part-time or full-time

A full-timer Class A RV owner will pay more for coverage than an individual who tows a camper to a few campsites a year.

What Kinds of Coverage Can an RV Insurance Policy Provide in Utah?

RV insurance is similar to auto insurance in the coverages that it provides. Since liability coverage is required in Utah, that will make up the base of your policy package, along with other familiar choices.

  • Liability insurance: This covers the cost for damage and injuries your RV causes to another person or their property when you're in an accident where you're at fault.
  • Collision insuranceThis covers the cost to repair or replace your RV if it is damaged or totaled in a collision, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive insurance: This covers the cost to repair or replace your RV if it is damaged or totaled by a non-collision event such as a hailstorm or theft.

There are additional policies you can add to your coverage depending on the type of RV you own and how you plan on using it.

  • Vacation liability coverage: If you frequent campsites, this policy can be beneficial, since it provides additional coverage if you cause property damage or injure someone while at the campsite.
  • Contents coverage: If your RV is filled with valuable personal property, contents coverage can protect your assets if they're damaged by a covered event like fire, theft, or a severe storm.
  • Full-timer coverage: This policy option is recommended for those who use their RV as a permanent residence. It operates more like homeowners insurance than vehicle insurance.
  • Towing and roadside assistance: If your RV were to break down, this policy helps cover the costs associated with towing it, which can be expensive because RVs typically require specialized towing.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance: If you're in an accident with an uninsured motorist that is not your fault, you could have a hefty repair bill that they're unable to pay. This coverage protects you in those instances. In Utah, uninsured motorist coverage is not required by law, but if you choose to purchase it, you must purchase a minimum of at least $25,000 per person or $65,000 per accident.

One of the biggest things to note about basic RV insurance is that it will not cover any damage to your vehicle in an at-fault accident without collision coverage. You also won't be covered for things like flooding or a tree falling on your RV without comprehensive coverage. Your independent insurance agent can make sure you have a package of policies that protects you on and off the road at all times.

What Is RV Gap Insurance?

Gap insurance is a type of coverage you can purchase for your RV that helps to pay off your vehicle loan if you total your vehicle shortly after you purchase it.

A brand-new RV can be expensive, ranging anywhere from $5,000 to $500,000. However, as soon as you drive off the lot, it starts to depreciate in value. If you were to get in an accident and total your RV, especially in the first few years of ownership, you could owe more on the loan than the total value of your RV.

This means you would have a gap between what your physical damage coverage pays out and how much you owe. Gap insurance bridges that gap. It is typically only useful for brand-new RV owners, and for only a year or two until the loan and the vehicle value are similar.

Utah Health Insurance for RVers

Health insurance is valuable to have at all times, but for RVers there are additional factors to consider. If you're a full-timer or on the road a lot, you need coverage that will work no matter where you're traveling. You also need to consider where any prescriptions and other important documents can be mailed if you're always on the road.

Whether you need to supplement your existing health insurance or are starting from scratch, a local independent insurance agent can work with you to get the right coverage that protects you when you're traveling, camping, or preparing for a trip.
