Arizona Trailer Statistics

These are some Arizona facts, according to statistical analysts:

  • Every year in Arizona, more than 6,300 trailer accidents occur.
  • Of these accidents, 1,600 lead to at least one injury and more than 100 lead to at least one fatality.
  • More than 525 such accidents occur in Arizona on a monthly basis, with more than 125 of these leading to at least one injury.
  • About two Arizona tractor-trailer accidents occur on a weekly basis that lead to at least one fatality.

Why Is Trailer Insurance Important?

Although some Arizona vehicle insurance policies extend to small utility trailers that you haul with your car or truck, the coverage on these policies is usually very limited. Any damage to the trailer itself may be covered, but any items in the trailer may not be covered. It's a good idea to carefully review your current policy to find out if you need additional coverage.

For large flatbed trailers and tractor-trailers, you may need to secure a separate policy in order to fully protect them against damage, theft and vandalism.

Not only does a trailer insurance policy help pay for repairs to put your trailer back on the road, but it can also be quite helpful should someone sue you because your trailer became unhitched and crashed into another motorist or that motorist's property.

You Can Find Insurance for Your Specific Kind of Trailer

One need only watch traffic on any given Arizona street or highway to know that trailers come in all shapes and sizes. If you must register your trailer with the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles, chances are very likely that you can find an insurance policy to cover it. Unless it is a homemade trailer, you should be able to secure insurance on the following types:

  • Horse and livestock trailers
  • Motorcycle trailers
  • ATV trailers
  • Boat trailers
  • Utility trailers
  • Flatbed trailers
  • Tractor-trailers

You May Have To Carry Trailer Insurance

There are some circumstances where trailer insurance is required by AZ law, but they are limited to the following:

  • Trailers that haul hazardous materials
  • Trailers that haul goods or people as part of business operations

Tractor-trailers must carry these minimum amounts of insurance coverage in AZ:

  • At least $15,000 in coverage per bodily injury per accident
  • At least $30,000 in coverage in total for bodily injury per accident
  • At least $10,000 in coverage for property damage per accident

Remember, however, that these are the minimum requirements and you may determine your trailer needs additional insurance protections.

What Does Trailer Insurance Cover?

Arizona insurance companies offer trailer insurance policies that are comparable to car insurance. You will be able to set limits on all of the following types of coverage options:

  • Liability coverage: Protects you from loss if your trailer becomes unhitched and injures another motorist or damages another person's vehicle or other property
  • Collision coverage: Helps you pay for damage to your trailer resulting from a crash or accident, regardless of who is at fault
  • Comprehensive coverage: Reimburses you for damage to your trailer due to severe weather events, fire, theft or vandalism
  • Commercial trailer insurance: Covers any trailer you may use for business

What Are Trailer Insurance Quotes Like?

There are so many types, sizes and values of trailers that it is impossible to determine average quotes for trailer insurance. Most Arizona insurance providers take several factors into account when calculating your trailer insurance quotes, including these:

  • The value of your trailer
  • The size of the trailer
  • The contents you might be transporting
  • Your driving history

Smaller, less expensive trailers will receive lower quotes than large, high-value trailers. Also, if you are transporting livestock, quotes will be higher for you than for someone hauling scrap. Those drivers with claims-free driving histories and no traffic violations will receive lower quotes than someone who has been involved in several accidents and has a history of tickets.

Be sure to ask your insurance agent if you would qualify for any insurance discounts by bundling your trailer policy with your car insurance.
