What Constitutes a Motorcycle and What Is Motorcycle Insurance?

In the most basic definition, motorcycles are essentially bicycles with a motor. They include choppers, sport bikes, motocross bikes, dirt bikes and even scooters. While dirt bikes typically are not required to have insurance, bikes that are considered “street legal” do have insurance requirements in most states.

Street-legal motorbikes generally require insurance that is similar to most other street vehicles, like cars and trucks. Illinois motorcycle insurance is designed to protect you from financial loss due to an accident or some event that causes damage to your bike, to yourself or to another person or their property. The basic coverage types are as follows:

  • Property damage liability: This pays for damage to another vehicle or object as a result of an accident in which you are at fault, up to the policy limit.
  • Bodily injury liability: This pays up to the policy limit for injuries caused by an accident for which you are at fault, up to the policy limit. Property damage liability and bodily injury liability insurance both can help pay for legal fees associated with a lawsuit.
  • Collision: This pays for damage to your motorbike resulting from a collision with another vehicle.
  • Comprehensive: This pays for damage to your motorcycle due to falling object, severe weather, vandalism or theft.
  • Medical payments: This is an extra coverage that pays for medical bills incurred as a result of injuries from an accident.
  • Uninsured motorist: This covers expenses incurred from an accident in which another vehicle operator is at fault, and does not have enough coverage or has no coverage at all.

Most policies have some exclusions. Therefore, be sure to read the fine print of your policy, or ask your Trusted Choice member agent to go over the fine print with you in detail so you understand exactly what you’re getting.

Is Illinois Motorcycle Insurance Required, and How Much Coverage Do I Need?

Since motorcycles are considered on-the-road vehicles in Illinois, the state requires all motorcycles to have a certain level of liability insurance before they can be registered for road use. State law requires liability coverage of $20,000 in personal injury liability for a single individual, $40,000 for all individuals in an accident and $15,000 in property damage liability. Illinois and 35 other states, plus the District of Columbia, require motorcycle insurance.

How much Illinois motorcycle insurance coverage you need may be more than what is required by state law. You’ll have to look at your financial situation and your ability to pay for damages and injuries if you get involved in an accident. For example, if you have assets that you could liquidate in order to pay costs associated with accidents, you may opt to have higher deductibles, or even less coverage in some situations.

Be sure to ask yourself whether you could replace your bike if it was a total loss. Questions like this will help you determine how much coverage above the state minimum you will need to protect yourself financially. These are all things we prefer not to think about, but the protection of insurance can provide excellent peace of mind.
